Can someone tell me what the "Cartel" on the airbox in the link is?

IIRC ,it stood for Car Telephone , at a time when these were just taking off . Very little about them on line - my quick googling found nothing .

I think they may have been car dealers/modifiers/customisers. There's an advert in The Times i/d December 9th 1983 from 'Cartel North', with a Lincoln phone number - 'body styling our speciality'. Cartel South were apparently in Woking and there are ones from them in i/d February 17th and 24th 1984, headed 'Cartel Cars & Conversions'. No addresses, just phone numbers. One of those also mentions bodywork and there's a later private small ad (December 7th 1984) for a 'Capri 2.8i turbo full cartel bodywork, Rial wheels.'

 

Most of the cars advertised are what one might term 'sporty saloons' - Capris, Quattros, Escort XR3i, Cavalier SRi etc.

Ah, should have tried the Telegraph first! They advertised regularly in both the Daily and Sunday editions. Again, mainly performance cars - Porsches, Jensens etc.

I think even a low speed collision in that might have brought on a case of the 'Lola limp' for both driver and passenger. And it would certainly fit neatly under the back end of an HGV, so I hope that's armoured glass,

Cartel were one of many sponsors of the De Lacy MC’s (originally) Seven Dales Rally which got renamed after the sponsor of the time, hence Mintex Rally, National Breakdown Rally, Cartel Rally etc etc. The De Lacy MC website refers to them as Cartel Communications, but I haven’t yet been able to confirm whether this was the same Cartel as the Dumfries sponsor.

The communications company seem to style themselves CarTel - at least currently. They are in Oldbury now, but were based in Birmingham until 2018 (source: Companies House). Presumably a private company until 2004, as this page says they have been in business since 1983. However, all the adverts I've seen in the papers above are for CARTEL in block capitals as per the photo of the car. Not conclusive, but something to consider.

According to this link Cartel the rally sponsors were taken over by Talkland in around 1990. The rally thus became the Talkland International Rally. Talkland themselves were taken over by Vodafone in 1996. Again, it’s still unclear whether these were the same people who sponsored Dumfries.

I understand that the team was called Associated Motorsport - although I covered the entire '83 F3 season I cannot remember who was involved with Johnny that year.

Presumably the entrant was Associated Motor Racing. Could it be the car was run by Dave Price Racing?

In 1978 Dave Price Racing were based in Twickenham. Can anybody elaborate?

Didn't Johnny have a sponsor ( possibly Italian) who funded him in 1983 before Les Thacker signed him for the BP team in 84 ? Possibly he was the owner of Associated Motoracing
