First race of the Sprint Cup in the books.

S01-Sprint-China.png

Obviously matching the race result. Good start for Lewis. Everyone else much in championship order.

Post China, Sainz has really dropped the ball and despite his win in Australia, he's lost the lead of the Asia-Pacific Cup by one point. Still, he's the guy who won in Singapore last year so there's still a fair chance someone other than Verstappen might win something this year.

05-China-Regional.png

Overall championship looking pretty much as expected so far.

05-China-World.png

Next month will be quite interesting as we see the first rounds of two new cups. There are two American races. First we see the opener of the Americas Cup in Miami, and the "Month of May" has it's traditional climax at the Indy 500. We also see the opener of the European Cup at Imola and the first Grande Epreuve  of the season at Monaco.

Second round of the Sprint Cup completed. Ignore the tie-breaks being solved incorrectly for now, but Excel can only do so much. Already more than 10 drivers scoring points, so the fight for the actual championship points is playing out throughout the field. Strong result for Ricciardo launches him into the mix, while Lewis hasn't capitalised on his great race in China after his various adventures today.

Another new Cup, another winner that isn't Verstappen. Lando, with his wonderful first win, takes the lead of the America's Cup. The longest Cup with two dropped scores to be had, I think we'll have some interesting fights this season.

06-Miami-Cup.png

Overall, while Verstappen will likely 2001 his way to this year's title, we have a fabulous battle between Checo, Lando and Charles forming for second. But with many scores to drop to come, things could really twist up.

06-Miami-World.png

Next time out, we begin the European Cup with Imola. Can't wait.

Edit: Updated scores post Sainz' penalty.

After a pretty exciting finish to the San Marino Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, we can start to put scores on the board for the European Cup. Points as per race result, as you'd expect.

07-Imola-Cup.png

In the overall World Championship standings, Max has an almost perfect score from five wins so far, with only the fastest lap points keeping him away from a maximum at this stage. Checo is maintaining second despite not increasing his score since Miami, but Leclerc and Lando are now tied for third.

07-Imola-World.png

No dropped scores next weekend, and we'll see which Indycar interlopers will get to jump who in the F1 standings. Big weekend coming up, Monaco and Indy. Grandes Epreuves are mandatory scores.

Points after Monaco.

"Season over!" they said. "Red Bull won't be beaten!" they said. Well we're eight Grand Prix in and we have four different winners from three different teams. Charles Leclerc gets his long awaited home win at Monaco, becoming the first Monegasque to win the Monaco Grand Prix since Loius Chiron in 1931. By doing so he catapults himself to second in the standings. Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly also open their point scoring accounts for this season. Only Ricciardo, Sargeant and the two Saubers are pointless so far.

08-Monaco.png

This will be a short lived update. Indy 500 results will be included on completion of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

Here we go. After a spectacular Indy 500, we now have 10 new points scorers, providing some nice targets for the lower half of the F1 drivers. Josef Newgarden slots into 10th overall. I feel like Tsunoda has it in him this year to beat all the Indy runners, but then there's a bit of a gap to Lance Stroll. Can he score more than 15 points this year?

Do you have a rule that only drivers who have scored in the main championship can take sprint points? Otherwise you’re missing Ricciardo’s sprint result in Miami

The rule is that the top 10 in the Sprint Cup score points as if it’s a single Grand Prix. Dan hasn’t scored in a Grand Prix yet so he hasn’t scored any points. If after the Qatar Sprint he’s in the top 10, he’ll score for it. Currently he’s sixth (bests Piastri on countback) so that would get him 8 points if he keeps that place.

Sprint scores will only be added on completion, in Qatar. So nobody’s Sprint points are in the current totals.

We're getting stuck into the European season now and Max has extended his lead in the European Cup with another close fought win. Lando cementing his position as second overall this year with a hard fought drive. Looks like Leclerc and Hamilton will be fighting for third in this one. Won't have long to wait for the next one. We're in Austria next weekend.

10-Spain-Cup.png

In the overall championship, Max adds seven points to his tally as his European points haul exceeds his Americas one. A better result for Alpine today but they're still way down the order.

Russell is quite close to Hamilton. Also if Piastri can string together his weekends, he will be the favourite for third.

Well well well, after a barnstorming last stint in the Austrian Grand Prix, and Max Verstappen finally getting some comeuppance for his dirty defensive antics, we have a 5th winning driver and a 4th winning team this year. Tremendous!

11-Austria-Cup.png

In the European Cup, Max retains the lead but George Russell slots into second. Lando dropped to third after his Verstappen-enforced retirement, only one point ahead of teammate Piastri, with Sainz and Hamilton close behind. Haas have popped into 9th and 10th, not too fat off Checo and his increasingly rubbish performances in the second Red Bull.

11-Austria-World.png

In the overall Championship, Max has basically wrapped it all up, but Lando retains a healthy second over the two Ferraris. We can expect Piastri and the Russell to start overhauling Checo soon, in their close fight.

Next weekend is the Grande Epreauve of the British Grand Prix, so all scores will be mandatory.

Half way through the season, and F1 has become so genuinely exciting I'm not sure I can be bothered with this thing any more. Needless to say the British Grand Prix delivered tons of excitement and a fantastic return to the top step for Lewis Hamilton. Also a great result for Nico Hulkenberg jumps him to 12th overall.

I’m thinking if I do continue this next year, of promoting Spain and Netherlands over Belgium and Italy for Grande Epreuve, status, as that way it’ll be all races with race winners on the grid.

This year the races have been won by British, Dutch, Spanish and Monegasque drivers, so I might make them the four Grandes Epreuves next year. All have the provenance to be considered so.

I think Spa needs to be removed next year anyway because I don’t think a Grande Epreuve should be a sprint weekend.

Sorry for the delayed update but I've been on holiday and my spreadsheet was on my home PC.

Aussies rejoyce, for with his win in Hungary, Oscar Piastri is now a challenger in the European Cup. A bad weekend at home for Max and this could be a championship he doesn't win this year. Who'd have thought? Oddly enough Oscar and Lando are really equal in their challenge, because Oscar will have to drop his 6 points from Spain, while Lando has no points to drop.

13-Hungary-Cup.png

Here are some permutations:

If either McLaren driver wins at Zandvoort, they will be European Champion. A second place is not enough for Max if Lando or Oscar wins the Dutch Grand Prix.

If either McLaren driver is second at Zandvoort, the other doesn't win, and Max is 4th without Fastest Lap or 5th with Fastest Lap or lower, they will be champion too.

Third place without Fastest Lap is not enough for the McLaren drivers to win, as they will tie with Max and Max will win on countback.

A third place with Fastest Lap will be enough for either McLaren driver, as long as Max is 5th or lower.

Neither Mercedes driver is close enough to be champion, even if they win.

It's nearly a winner takes all situation.

Not quite as exciting for the world championship at the moment. Max has a big lead, but the Lando has a good chance to close the gap in the Middle Eastern and American Cups especially.

Belgium update:

Verstappen extends his lead marginally, though he's not won a single Grande Epreuve so far this year. Pisatri jumps to 4th overall and only a single point behind Leclerc. Russell, the only other multiple winner other than Verstappen so far, still down in 7th.

Post DQ edit: With Russell disqualified in Belgium, Lewis inherits the win, and has now won two Grandes Epreuves in a row. George have two no-scores in the GEs is really hurting his championship total, and he's still below Perez.

14-Belgium.png

But I'm really looking forward to the European Cup title decider in Zandvoort next month.

Congratulations to Lando Norris. F1 European Champion of 2024!

With the Dutch Grand Prix turning out to be a bit of a walk in the dunes for Lando, he was able to eek out a 3 point lead over Max Verstappen and take the European Champioship, with one win and three seconds on the table.

07af72e0-0b2c-11ef-a94f-d9833abc615e.jpg

Max, despite two wins, only had a single second place today and one of two fifths to count to his tally. He just misses out.

2124472-44446778-2560-1440.jpg

Oscar Piastri, also in with a shout today, ends up a comfortable third.

European Cup points standings:

15-Netherlands-Cup.png

In the World Championship, Lando has now closed to 14 points off Max, so unlike in real life, the championship fight is properly on for Lando.

15-Netherlands-World.png

Next time out is the final Grande Epreuve, the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. So far neither of our main contenders have won one of these prestigious races, so last chance for either of them. With McLaren's form, Lando might be in with a good shout. See you then,.

If there was a lot of crossover between these events then it would be worth doing. As it is you’d have all the individual inners on 25 points, except the Le Mans winners on 8 1/3 each, and all the other one offs and shared drives wouldn’t really add anything to the final table. I only included Indy as a historical joke, really.

I think Foyt won more than Mario on this list.

Ickx attempted 5 legs, won 3 and was 2nd in another. Foyt also won 3, but Ickx gets it on countback.

Add Pikes Peak and it makes a difference of course, Mario did win there despite not being called Unser.

As a figurehead ambassador rather than purely based on results I wouldn't like to choose between them. I might keep Jacky away from flag waving duties at Monaco, but that's about it.

I suppose Lando Norris is wishing this system was being used in real life. He's now only six point behind Max Verstappen. It's on!

Charles Leclerc is the honorary king of Grandes Epreuves, winning two this year. This prestige doesn't bring any more reward though. You simply have to bask in the glory. Let's face it, winning Monaco and Monza in the same season carries infinitely more weight that winning Baku and Qatar.

An interesting one today.

Max still well ahead in the Middle-East Cup due to dominating Bahrain and Saudi. But it's been a good Cup for the rookies and subs, with Bearman and Colapinto getting some good points today. Still a couple of rounds to go on this one, so a lot to play for.

17-Baku-Cup.png

Now due to the dropped scores system in play, Max Verstappen actually increased his championship lead today, as he gained 10 points from his 3rd best Cup total. Lando actually didn't increase his total at all, because Middle-East has so far been his lowest scoring Cup. However, with so many races left and most of them in the Americas Cup, things can change a lot. We've also got all our Alexes in a clump in 16th-18th.

17-Baku-World.png

Next week we decide the Asia-Pacific Cup. The only all scores count Cup, and it's close. Each of the top five has a realistic shot at winning it, though man of the moment Oscar is unlikely to in a distant 6th.
