I am sorry to report from NZ that former Tasman Cup and saloon/touring car hero Dennis Marwood passed away a few days ago - he was 90.
I don't suppose many winners in an F5000 made their name in a modest Humber 80 (an NZ version of the Hillman Minx) but by the mid-60s Marbles was selected to drive the 'Rothmans Cooper' - an ex-F1 T66 in which he scored Tasman points and finished runner-up to Jim Palmer in the Gold Star championship.
He was entrusted with the mighty Eisert when we embraced F5000 and won the first Gold Star race in it in late '69. The early 70s were spent at or near the front of Touring Car fields aboard a 1969 Trans Am Camaro as the popularity of that area of motorsport went from strength to strength.
As a confirmed 'Alfa-holic', Dennis continued racing Alfa Romeos until well past pension age and, after finally hanging up his helmet, continued to be a popular spectator around the traps. The cars mentioned above are merely a snapshot of the wide range of vehicles he raced - but whatever it was, it was invariably at or near the pointy end.
RIP Marbles
