I'm seeing on Twitter that Brazilian media is reporting that he is dead. Perhaps a heart attack.  What a shame.

Tony Kanaan confirmed it.

I remember Gil coming to CART, going to Hall and then and making Walker Racing the threat that Robby Gordon had never managed. He was fast, but he was also smart. Penske saw that, and he was a deserved champion and seemed like he was a really nice guy as well. It's always sad to see people go before it seems they should. RIP Gil.

My goodness, what a tragedy for his family. That is no age.

Sometimes you wonder why we even bother. Damn.

Jesus... absolutely shocked at the news. 56 is no age to die at. Still can't believe it's true.

RIP Gil.

That's very sad. I remember back to when he was in F3 with David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello.

(Also, can the title be edited to say something like "RIP". People put these threads with just the name and I don't think clicking on a thread should be some sort of "gamble" - can't think of a better word.)

Sad news at such a young age. My sympathies to his family - especially to his son Luke as it must be a terrible feeling to be there and unable to do anything. Descanse em paz, Gil.

That’s a bit of a punch to the gut this morning. He was always one of my favourite Indycar drivers. Won the first race I watched on TV, Cleveland 1996. Great guy and gone way too soon.

RIP

This very sad news. He should have had plenty more years left in the tank. May he rest in peace, all thoughts with his family.

This is horrendous and so shocking. No age at all and such a shock. One of my favourite drivers when I was young, full stop - I always valued CART and F1 equally in those days. I saw his late career title double kinda in parallel with Mika Hakkinen's in F1. Also an important figure in F1 post retirement. RIP.

I'm shocked. I remember him for a lot of things since his f3000 days..

As a Honda fan, he has been part of my trip through Motorsport history in a lot of ways, driver or member of staff. Seemed always kind.

:( One of the very first drivers I admired while growing up, just wished his McLaren stint was as successful as his racing one. So sad to hear, rest in peace champ.

This is awful to hear.  R.I.P. Gil.  I still recall watching coverage of the British F3 championship that was contested between him, Rubens and DC.

Tragic parallel to Denny Hulme, who also died of a heart attack, while competing, at 56.

So incredible sad. I’ve always been a fan of the fast drivers that show class, character and intelligence both on and off track. Dear Gil certainly was among them and I was a huge fan of his since his Formula Opel Lotus days. RIP.
