Hi, does anyone have any information available about this race?

I can find hardly anything about it online, except the bare results at the excellent F2 Register, and the snippet below (I can’t remember where I found it). I’m surprised I can’t find any articles about it, given the quality field in F2 that season. With Clark, Stewart, Brabham, Hulme, Hill et al charging around Montjuic in the rain, it must have been a fascinating event.

Thanks in advance.

How's your Spanish? Race report from El Mundo Deportivo. You can adjust the date backwards to see practice reports and previews.

Sadly my Spanish is nowhere near good enough... will have to see if I can find a way to get the text into Google translate. Thanks for the link.

Also, another point - as far as I can tell this was the first race for cars at Montjuic since the 1930's.

There may be others in between 1946 and 1968, but Montjuic was certainly the venue for a five-race programme of touring car races on August 11th 1946 - it had already hosted a motorcycle race meeting on May 5th 1946. Paco Godia Sales and Alberto Puig Palau were among the 'also-rans' in the touring car races, which were pretty much 'run what you brung'.

A tentative September date was made for a Spanish GP on the AIACR's 1940 international calendar (although no circuit was specified). And AFAIK the first post-Civil War event was a hillclimb at Vallvidrera near Barcelona on April 28th 1940. Primarily for motorcycles, but with a small entry of cars. Spain also ran a few motorcycle road races during the early 1940s. I don't know of any others for cars in the intervening period - although there were hopes of a race for gazogenos at Montjuic in 1943, but only two entries were submitted.

Depending on whether you're after more info concerning Montjuic than just this race I think your best bet might  be to get a copy of Javier De Arco De Izco's book  " Montjuic - 40 Years of Motor Racing History at the Park Circuit" as it's pretty comprehensive. It's in Spanish and English.  Not cheap though

According to my copy of the  excellent “Montjuic 40 years" book  the first  post war car race was the “I Carrerra de Turismos” 8-11 August 1946 followed by a similar event in 1947. Thereafter there was some form of car racing every year onwards. (usually sports/GT and touring cars)

The first single seat/open wheel races appear to be the Monomil Panhards which appeared on 16-18 April 1959 along with a non-championship motor cycle GP.

First major F3 race was the Trofeo BP on May 9th 1965 -two heats ,won on aggregate by “Geki” BWA-Cosworth and then, as discussed above the “ I Gran Premio de Barcelona de Formula 2 over the 21-24 April. 1966 -Organised by the Royal Automobile Club de Cataluña.

îî What he said!!

From researching the motorcycle Grands Prix, there were always some car races, usually low level national touring cars competing. I also found the Monomil race, with Francisco Godia and Alex Soler-Roig competing, and Bernard Boyer winning.
