They had Vasseur and saw it better to hold on to Abiteboul than him in their clashing heads - By them Vasseur was not seen as then one best suited to bring the team forward.

IIRC Vasseur wanted more freedom in running the team than Renault was willing to give him so he left. Abiteboul was chosen as the loyal company man who can be controlled more and won't step out of line.

Well done to Ocon for dragging the car onto Q2 for the first time

Ocon’s been having a pretty impressive start to the season, shame it’ll largely go unnoticed.

A slightly better weekend and points looked at one point actually possible, but still lacking a lot of raw pace currently.

Upgrades cannot come soon enough.

Amazing job by Ocon to get out of Q1 considering that the ideal lap time (best individual sectors) still leaves Alpine as the slowest car.

Just getting overtaken left right and centre and traction is beyond abysmal

Anybody with a hand in creating this dog is going to have a tough time finding another job in F1...

That was very painful to watch, both cars being overtake on the straight left right and centre. Hopefully they will be able to claw some pace back at some point in the season.

Crazy to think that in 2022 they were 4th in WCC. Feel sad for both of the drivers.

I thought they’d be able to keep some cars behind for a while having got up to P11-P12 after the two starts but they were swallowed up by the field sharpish and they were just mobile chicanes to navigate, horror show once more.

Pretty schoking performance once again. Being overtaken like they were F2 cars in turns 5-6.  Ocon must be giving it all in order to line up for a Mercedes drive in case Sainz ends up at RB. So far he is beating Gasly.

The only positive is that they get to wear H. Moser & Cie watches for the year.

My mind cannot comprehend how bad this car is currently. The car is so bad on traction Gasly was fighting it all the time just putting power down. God help us at Monaco and similar places.

Race pace was awful and a long behind even William's, Haas and Sauber.

Both cars were damaged by Gasly hitting Ocon at the second start. But still, obviously not good enough, especially in race trim.

I really hope they bring something to this car sooner than later, this is really sad to see, and love or hate them, it must be really difficult for Gasly and Ocon, and I thought Ocon's attitude on the radio in Japan was excellent (re making Q2)

ALPINE FAST-TRACKS F1 FLOOR UPGRADE TO CHINA AMID RECOVERY PUSH: https://www.motorspo...-push/10599374/

Perhaps, the new floor will also address the over-the-weight limit issue.  Surely, the new wing which debuted for Japan could not reduce a lot of weight; but in aggregate with the new floor, hopefully we can see a step up in performance.

Tough draw that this is on a Sprint Weekend though.  Limited practice time and Esteban will have to stay out of the wars.

Being where the are performance wise they can add new parts, give a thorough test during sprint, if no good break curfew and start from pit on Sunday - Not a great way to speed development up, they need to take all they can get.

It is a bit too early to say if Ocon is better driver than Gasly, I mean people remember the last race, but on paper the result of the last year is there.

It is not that I dislike Ocon, and I do believe Alpine will bring update here in China, which will change the situation.

Gasly is new to the team and Ocon does have advantage. I think it is no brainer that the team support both drivers equally to achieve as high result as possible, so, I am looking forward to see what will be happen here.

Ocon is a lot better than he gets credit for... and as he seems to like this years car more than Gasly its logical he would be ahead.

Its SO bad its hard to make real judgements from it tho

There are reports of a lightweight chassis (or floor?) with Ocon.

Very slow on the straights:

There was a really good battle between Ocon and Stroll for the second half of the sprint race, that ended – after multiple attacks – with a second-to-last-corner overtake for Esteban. Of course, Stroll‘s performance level was again somewhat pathetic when compared to his own teammate, but man, was it good to watch.

Progress has been made this weekend so that is a positive. Ocon good effort just missing out on points and Gasly did very well as well considering is on the old spec.

Traction is still very poor and straight line speed not great though so Miami might be very tough in the middle sector.

11 and 13 is pretty good, although probably helped by all the chaos.

A progress is visible, but a small one. At least it seems Alpine is now faster than Williams, for what its worth.

They actually jumped from P10 to P9 in the constructors standings thanks to Ocon's 11th place finish and Sauber being total crap.

Massively better than the absolute disaster that was Japan but is the update actually an improvement or is it just that the track suited the car better? Ocon was a couple of tenths quicker in quali (the same as he has been all year) but Gasly looked slightly quicker throughout the entire race. Not convinced the update was any significant step forward at all

Gasly said in the post race interview on f1.com that upgrade's worked on Ocon's car.

The pit stops are far too slow

10000 € fine for the pit lane drama with Gasly.
