Hi all,

I'm an occasional commenter on here. In my day-to-day however, I am a journalist, so I am looking to merge those two passions to write an article on FinTech companies sponsoring F1 teams - in honour of the VCARB launch of course.

So if anyone has any examples from yesteryear, or more recently, of finance/tech companies sponsoring F1 teams, please leave them below.

Many thanks in advance,

Harry.

The first one I can remember was Moneytron on the Onyx cars of 1989. Some sort of investment service turned out to be a scam? The owner Jean-Pierre Van Rossem was an 'interesting' character and ended up in prison I seem to recall?

Solely Financial Tech companies? Or Banking institutes as well? Because I could drum up, post 2000 alone, HSBC, RBS, ING, Santander, UBS, Credit Suisse, Banco do Brasil, RBC, MIG, Snoras, Falcon and ICICI.

There is of course Mercedes' tie-up with Sam Bankman-Fried's company:

I'm sure if we go on long enough we'll be able to think of a fintech F1 sponsor that didn't result in jail time for someone

I'm looking more for FinTechs I'd say. Ones that have even a slither of a tech presence.

I remember Williams had Andersen Consulting on the driver helmets in 1996/97 - seems they went the way of the dodo in 2002 due to questionable accounting practices linked to Enron...

Not quite. Andersen Consulting was the consulting arm of Arthur Andersen and became an independent company in 2001. It was renamed Accenture and continued to appear on Williams driver helmets into the 2000s. It was the original Arthur Andersen that folded after the Enron scandal in 2002.

Not exactly. Andersen Consulting was a management consultancy, set up as a subsidiary of Arthur Andersen the accountants. The accountancy firm (but not the consultancy) was involved in the Enron scandal and ended being wound up nearly 20 years ago. Meanwhile, the consultancy separated out and was renamed Accenture. Not many people have a good word to say about management consultants, but I do - I worked alongside Andersens and Accenture consultants for years, and found them excellent to work with, and enthusiastic supporters of the kart meetings I organised!

Accenture sponsored Williams in the years that followed as well. I believe they were some odd 10 years sponsor of the team in total.

I don't remember any of the PayPal types on F1 cars in the 90s, and in the naughties they were global banks.  I think the first one's were the online securities brokers... Mig FX at Brawn in 2009 & FX Pro at Virgin/Manor in 2010 perhaps?

How far back do you want to go? The first finance company involvement in F1 was probably the Yeoman Credit/Bowmaker and UDT Laystall tie-ups with BRP and Parnell Racing at the start of the 1960s.

No one has mentioned the obnoxious crypto sponsors yet? Maybe not reputable as actual licensed Fintech companies, but crypto is a bet even the most reputable banks are looking into, so to me it's the two faces of the same coin, and these days banks and crypto are the two things doing REALLY well despite the state of the economy, hence their huge sponsorship agreements.

What is a Fintech?

Is this a serious question? If it is, it's the term applied to startups in the finance space. Not really pure tech companies, nor established banks, rather small venture-capital backed upstarts that deal with customer's money, but are not proper banks with all the regulations.

If you hold your money at a Fintech bank, it will have a disclaimer like "your account is not protected by the FSCS fund" so if they fail tomorrow, your money is gone.

Yes it is a serious question. It’s a bit confusing when people post jargon in an OP with no explanation.

Thank you for clarifying.

Fintech= Financial technology, they can be anything from crypto base transaction to traditional software companies that design software that banks, insurers and credit companies use.

bit of a tangent but surely one of the most famous financial companies to sponsor an F1 car was MasterCard, who could forget (or should that be remember) the MasterCard Lola from 1997?
