Legendary Australian Engineer - and resident of this manor - Kevin Drage was honoured with the 2023 Phil Irving Award by CAMS Ltd t/as Motorsport Australia. CAMS' national awards were held in Jeff's Shed (Melbourne Exhibition Centre) in Melbourne last night.
The citation by the CAMS PR Flack reads, "Another individual boasting decades of experience in motorsport was Phil Irvine (sic FFS) Award Winner, Kevin Drage, who was recognised for his continual commitment to innovation and improvement of the essential components used by motor cars in motorsport."
I had great pleasure in working with KD on articles about his Clisby F1 1.5-litre V6 (MotorSport) and the four-cam, two-valve Globe-Ford 289 V8 (Australian Muscle Car) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience - and learned a lot.
What a fantastic, gentle, talented man he is.
Well done KD! I shall partake of a Coopers Red in your honour shortly.
The Phil Irving Award is "In honour of the remarkable achievements of the late Phil Irving OBE, an outstanding Australian engineer whose efforts impacted motorsport on the world stage, the Phil Irving Award recognises outstanding skill and achievement by an individual Australian engineer or Australian engineering company devoted to serving and positively contributing to competitive motorsport."
My favourite previous winners are Ron Tauranac, Peter Holinger, Bob Britton (Rennmax), Michael Borland (Spectrum), Richard Bendell (Motec), Ron Harrop, Dave Mawer and Peter Molloy.
