There wasn't a technical thread so here we are.

 

First thoughts... The front suspension is sleek! I love the look of it. You can tell they placed a lot of emphasis on reducing drag with the sidepods and inlets. The cosmetic package looks sharp.

 

The car is allegedly six tenths faster than the 2023 Bahrain spec. Expectations are in line, but still disappointing the team didn't innovate further. This puts AM behind Red Bull and Ferrari (rumour is Ferrari found 7-8 tenths). We'll soon find out where Mercedes and McLaren stand. Maybe 5th or 6th best car with it being close? I expect RB to move ahead with the Red Bull chassis alone.

As mentioned in the other thread, Stroll's direct quote says: "It depends on what McLaren did during the winter. So it's very difficult to make predictions, but I hope to recover the 3 tenths and find another three,” added the Canadian."

 

I wouldn't read much into what he said, he's just hoping the team manages to leapfrog McLaren. I liked what Fallows was talking about earlier in terms of having a better base car which can be developed across the season, I hope the team can make big upgrades like McLaren managed last season and keep getting better.

On an unofficial AM Twitter account, the shakedown allegedly went well and the car had really good balance. Hopefully the baseline is good and the car can be developed aggressively this year with updates that work well.

Absolutely, that sounds very promising. I'm glad that it went well, they definitely need to start fresh from last season, as the last half of the season was painful to watch regarding the new updates not working well. I rather start the season off a little slow but have a very aggressive and affective development plan throughout the season, hopefully AM can beat McLaren.

Pullrod vs. pushrod. McLaren, Alpine, and Red Bull already use pushrod, so it's only natural that Mercedes would switch to this.

Sorry, I was just looking at the 2024 side of the photo, thinking about how flat the AMR24 pushrod arm is compared to what other pushrod rear cars had last year (Red Bull, McLaren, etc. iirc).

You haven't seen McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull yet..... 
And those are the teams where you could expect 'extreme iterations' over the other ones.

Interesting video here, quickly reviewing some features of the new car. Especially interesting imho was the bit about the 'split lines' on the ramps that were causing fllow detachment issues last year. Now the entire sidepod is one piece.

The change nonetheless should send cleaner air towards the diffuser.

I'm going to throw a guess out.

 

The new rear suspension is not ideal for Astons concept and information was not passed along quick enough for them to adjust for the start of the 2024 season, hints of it being intentional because of how Aston showed up the factory team in 2023.

They know it will be a slow start but are hoping for a fast finish. There will be a lot more chatter from Aston about being happy with the new facilities and looking forward to designing more of there own car.

Merc do have form for this over the years to their customers (most famously not sending McLaren new cooling specs for the 2014 engines), but everything I have seen so far points to uncertainty in correlation with the testing rig by Mercedes engineers.

Intentional or not, the results for AM are the same, in that they didn't have a final spec until too late. Something that the FIA should address somehow.

True. I wouldn't put it past Mercedes to delay the specs in order to screw AM, just like they did by protesting at the end of the Saudi Arabia GP and trying to steal a podium.

Absolutely. It's amazing how such a small thing as a split line between two pieces can disrupt the laminar flow of the air across the pieces.

That was a development they had last season but discontinued due to the part breaking under the jack. I wonder how reliable it is now?

 

A reliable Twitter account said that the first real update to this car won't happen until the 7th race of the season at Imola. I truly hope it's earlier than that and that it fixes a lot of the woes of this car so that Alonso is encouraged to continue racing.
