For the last couple of months, I – along with my friend and fellow writer, Kevin Guthrie – have been working closely with Bob Evans on his autobiography, Happy Lucky Days. The book is now available on our new website, www.bhp-publishing.co.uk. Bob’s writing style is highly engaging and he provides a thoroughly entertaining account of his long and varied career. Highlights include his memories of driving for Alan McKechnie (with whom he won the 1974 European F5000 title), working for Louis Stanley and Colin Chapman, plus his involvement with Dome and the Aston Martin Nimrod programme.

The book itself runs to 196 pages (softback, 270x210mm portrait) and contains over 200 images, many from Bob’s personal collection. It is printed on high-quality 150gsm silk paper and priced at £32 (plus postage). Like all our books will be, Happy Lucky Days is designed and printed in Great Britain. We can currently offer copies signed by Bob (in purple ink of course!) at no extra cost. The Foreword is by Bob’s close friend, Andrew Marriott.

On the rear cover, Doug Nye offers: “It really is immensely readable, fun and tremendously informative. You have painted vivid pictures of how life was in the 1970s. Those passages, I think, are superb. The pen portraits of some of the people you encountered – Alan McKechnie, Colin Chapman, Victor Gauntlett, Aubrey Woods, Robin Hamilton, plus Big Lou – are fantastic.”

Mine has arrived and looks promising. I have to get from Peking to Paris first , in a literary sense, but I'm looking forward to the read . A quick scan has already revealed  that he was brought up in a Lincolnshire village I knew well when I lived in Lincoln. But  the local press didn't mention him that I recall ,  although locals Ian Ashley and (especially)  Rick Gorne got lots of coverage.

Nice bloke Bob.He once lent Paul and I his "Mother wouldn't like it" Merlyn if I fixed the exhaust;as it happened, I lived next door to Hexagon on Highgate North Hill (DRW was at the top), I wandered round the back, asked if they could weld up the split, which they did, turning down payment. I bough a can of Sperex, painted the exhaust in virginal white, re-attatched it, and off we trailed for a day at Castle Coombe - Magic! Thanks Bob.

I gave in and now have another book for the collection and I am really looking to reading after a quick perusal.

NB The book is reviewed in this week's Autosport (which also has a lovely shot of an oversteering DN3 from 1974 for me to drool over).

Mine arrived two days ago, and I started skim reading before bed that night. 3 hours later I had to finally put it down; it's eminently readable, very insightful and the author comes across as a pretty modest guy, with his feet firmly on the ground. I enjoyed reading his thoughts on Big Lou as well. Haven't got to the post F1 bit yet but have my own writing to do as well. Not enough hours in the day...

I can strongly recommend this book to any F1 / F5000 enthusiast

To answer your question, Doug.

Marcus Simmons loved it. To quote:

'A fantastically enjoyable read.'

'It's a genuine hoot and prompts more laugh-out-loud moments than you've got fingers to count them on.'

Just read this book. And I mean "just",  having only finished it a couple of hours ago.  It's real "unputdownable" stuff - I was reading it from 10 last night and  stopped at half 2 by which time sleep was kicking in. The first thing I did this morning was to finish it.  Such a good read.  Can honestly say it's one of the best driver's autobiographies I have ever read but I'll admit to a touch of bias as it covers my favourite period in racing and some of my favourite categories. I always rated Bob as a driver and now I rate him as man too.  So much background, so much information.... His views on Aubrey Woods were pretty much what I suspected, and Alan McKechnie has to be the arch- enthusiastic privateer of all time. What a character - never again  will I feel guilty about having another glass of wine.  I'll just remember Alan's advice that the more you drink, the cheaper it gets.

In other words, this book is good.  Very, very good. If you haven't read it yet, get on with it it. You will not be disappointed.

I actually purchased my copy at the Shelsley Nostalgia festival signed by Bob. Had a really pleasant chat with , seriously recommend it! I also purchased Mike Wilds book as well and ditto with the nice chat, I also recommend that and whilst I'm in a recommending mood the books about Roger Williamson and Tom Pryce are worth getting.

Based on this discussion went to the website to purchase a copy, but shipping cost to NE USA is equal to the book price.  I cross referenced it on the EVRO site to see if their shipping costs were off, but no, seems like around $40 USD is the current rate for a single book.

Now I need to take a breath, go back and think about whether sinking more book debt will get me a better cost/book shipping rate per book (buy more, save more!)... I'll eventually rationalize my way around this problem.
