I'm sure older posters will have their own thoughts, but in my opinion, that's one of the most impressive debuts I can remember in my 25 years of watching the sport. Outstanding.

Off the top of my head - Alesi and Schumacher were incredible.

I am sure I am missing more but those two were well above Bearman. As others have mentioned - I would have been disapointed had he finished further back.

But he kept it out of trouble and had a decent race - nothing to light the world on fire IMO.

all a rookie should be able to do is to spark your desire to see more of him. There are hardly any clear things after the first race - but if you want to see more that's mission accomplished by that person

But every single person in the pits and paddock until that retirement saw something very, very, very special to the point of getting him out of Jordan and into Benetton, sometime it is when you know, you know.

True, but after being 7th on the grid 7 tenths faster than his way more experienced team mate

edit - just checked - the good old days when 2nd place was 1 second down and 7th was 3.4 seconds down on pole.

So not that it really ever panned out to a great F1 career Kamui Kobayashi came from 'no where' - He should have been picked up by bigger teams, but were not - He has since shown repeatedly that he was indeed the real deal.

Right, the collective stupidity of F1 team bosses versus an F1 forum poster's insight.

Happens all the time, and we are often right.

Schumacher's 7th place was joint-best grid position by Jordan that year. De Cesaris was 7th in Hockenheim.

Yeah but they had found something in Hungary, the previous race. Bertrand Gachot had set the fastest race lap in Budapest, and he had a bet with his mechanics that he could qualify the car on the front 2 rows at Spa. But then he got arrested for the taxi incident. So the car was likely better as many thought at that point. But still Schumacher was a special talent off course.

For clothing, perhaps. For modelling, not so much.

And because of Zhou's accident in FP3, Bearman only had time to do one (1) push lap on the soft tyre before qualifying. So he must have gone into qualifying without really knowing the limit or having full confidence on the soft tyre.

Because of the starting position he had to spend the first 20 laps of the race getting past Tsunoda, Zhou and Hülkenberg. After that, he kept the same pace as Norris, Hamilton, Piastri, Alonso and Russell. Not bad at all.

Correction after watching F1TV onboards: He actually pushed for three (3) laps in FP3. At the end of sector 1 on his cooldown lap, with the clock running out, he asked if he could change SOC and push a bit. So he pushed through sectors 2 and 3, and then he was told he could keep pushing in sector 1 after taking the chequered flag. Finally, he pushed on the next lap as well after doing a practice start on the grid.

Schumacher got a whole day's testing at Silverstone as well as the entire available practice time before he attempted to qualify that Jordan in Belgium.

Bearman wishes he'd had that luxury.

20 laps in a car around silverstone, then a bicycle ride round Spa. And no simulators.

Bearman is very familiar with the circuit having raced there in F2, and had some F1 practice sessions in 2023 plus lots of sim time.

I'm not making a comparison there because it is not possible to really make any comparison. They both did something that deeply impressed the sport.

The task put before Michael and Ollie was very different.  The teams were in different positions, the tracks were very different, and the cars were very different.  Both did what they needed to do in an impressive manner.  Michael showed speed and that was needed.  Ollie showed maturity, which was needed.

That was exactly my point yes.
