Former Lake Macquarie coal mine site to become multi-million-dollar racetrack for car enthusiasts (msn.com)

Sounds very interesting.

Hope it's not another boring Tilke circui.t

How is this thread in any way relevant to a forum devoted to motor racing nostalgia?

with dearth of venues in NSW I'm sure vintage race car drivers would be interested in a new circuit becoming available.

And all of us would love to see them going around, Look at what Phillip Island attracts..

Personally I would prefer my nostalgia to be running around on a track rather than stuck in a museum.

Advice of a coning new circuit will encourage people to invest in nostalgia.

Except it's not really a race track. Well, not for the Great Unwashed, don't you know.

It's a playground for drug dealers, real-estate agents and stock-brokers to play with their toys.

There was plans for a circuit and motorsport park North of Newcastle and South of Bulahdelah, area was surveyed and basic planning completed but i guess Lake Macquarie will end that folly.

Well, since I wrote that horrible drivel some decades ago now, I might not quite agree with the case being closed; I have no idea why that drivel (as polite a word as I can conjure up) has not been replaced.

"Nostalgia" was the last thing I wanted for this forum. However, thanks to be too focused on its launch, I neglected in all the shuffle to get it going that I forgot/overlooked to let the person putting the site together what I wanted to call it.

What I had in mind was something such as "The Motor Sport History Forum," with the intent to focus on what we might think of as "history stuff," rather than "nostalgia."

Not until Bira had the pilot ready and was using the working name, "The Nostalgia Forum" did I realize that that wasn't what I wanted. However, she liked it and, That. Was. That.

I tried to get it changed, but that went nowhere and fast. Therefore, I sucked it up and got on with things.

I still do not like the name and Never Will.

The intent on my part was to attempt to create at least a somewhat serious forum focusing on the history of motor sport.

That idea as such may not have quite gone as intended, but over the now decades there has been some really, really good material end up here from what can only be described as top notch research.

Along with many, many great insights on a long list of topics from what seems to be no end of people.

The forum morphed into something of a hybrid, mixing serious research with nostalgia with simply many, many good observations on the sport.

As with no end of other ideas, what was intended has over the years become something else, it being what it is, as they say.

Without exception, the folks here over the nearly quarter of a century have been great folks, pleasant, knowledgeable, nice, and have a deep interest and compassion for the sport.

Yeah, I would have liked it to be more of a research-oriented, scholarly if you will, forum, but then again, that is my background and training.

And, yes, that was what I intended, but as we are reminded, "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

On the other hand, we have a forum that in its 25th year and I think has been enjoyed by easily thousands of people by now.

And, so it goes.

The circuit you mention is Italia Park and, is close to being ready for use. The Black Rock development at Wakefield was approved by Lake Macquarie Council many years ago.

Golly, maybe it’s just me… but somehow a guy with a dozen posts hasn’t invested the time here to tell us what’s appropriate to discuss.

I normally welcome new posters with vigor, but in this case will take a pass.

There may be a history lesson to come out of this. I see a number of parallels here with the Cromwell circuit here in NZ. Originally constructed for the same purposes as this one - which it does still fulfil. But a new owner - T Quinn esq - and apparent financial necessity have seen Cromwell staging full race meetings.  While it is set up for a pleasant visitor experience, designed for spectator access it is not. In my personal experience racing there is best viewed on TV.

So at least be warned. A change of owner could change the use.

A pity then that the guy was right.  Out of the mouths of babes and new members etc

News of a future race track - not a restoration of an old one or an updating or whatever - simply is not Nostalgic (Biratm) nor is it Motor Racing History (Cappstm) and this thread ought really to be moved to RCF where the Aussie regulars there can comment on it too.

This new track and Circuit Italia are in completely different directions from Newcastle.

The new track is at Wakefield southwest of Newcastle.

Circuit Italia is north of Raymond Terrace and Newcastle

Bruce are you implying the circuit should not be built because it would be used by the "wrong" people?

Better they build a race track on spare land than a f**cking golf course

Nope, just cautioning that we shouldn't get too excited if we're unlikely to get an invite.

I just want to mention that one of NSW's current club circuits was built as a 'Driver Training Centre'. There was something about a DA to hold races but it seemed to disappear.
