No…
Cincinnati (better known as Northern Kentucky International)
90 mins up I-74 much easier( no Chicago) better roads and scenery) There used to be direct flights from LGW but one needs to ‘check that’ as Gatwick is now mostly package holidays and freight.

Jp

Doesn't look like there are any direct flights anymore, but i'd happily skip Chicago if i were to go again!

Chicago/O'hare can and usually is the 9th level of Hell. Unless you have Trusted Traveler.

If you plan a 2 hour layover at O'hare then it is a 20 minute flight from Chicago to Indianapolis.

The drive from Chicago to Indianapolis on I65 sucks hard.

The drive from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky is easy and relatively pleasant.

I take both those drives all the time.

Can attest to that. Not the kind of drive you want to do after landing jetlagged from Europe.

This is what I did in 2018. Probably on jon's recommendation, too. :D

Fly to Chicago, then it's a 3-4hr drive south from there.

That is one option, I decided that 4 hours driving across the mid West wasnt my idea of fun, so I flew via New York, stayed a night near JFK and flew on the next day, then stopped back in NYC on the way back. I'd like to go for more of the 500 experience but not sure I'm keen on 10 days in Indianapolis

Ten days in Indy
makes one night in Bangkok seem
a relative breeze.

I do recall on the drive down that i could have sworn that I'd already been past that farm already' several times. The scenery doesn't change alot!

You could pull a Bernie E. and helicopter to your luxury accommodations in Chicago on a daily basis.

Beyond the snark I've already participated in, 10 days in Indy is easy to manage if you view Indy as a base.  As probably discussed in prior "how-to" threads, northeast Indiana and southeast Michigan are an auto museum lover's dream location, from the Henry Ford to the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum to any number of smaller places dedicated to automotive or racing history.  Plus you can spend a day or two exploring the theatre, museums, and/or art in Chicago.  It could be a very memorable trip.

Such an underrated president. For one, he signed the Sherman Anti-Trust Act into law.

It's the haters that caused Pea Soup Andersons to close…

:D  First, Pea Soup Andersen's is in Buellton, but at the junction to Solvang.

Clearly the real reason for their closure must have been due to the second bowl of soup gratis, creating a Red Lobster-like situation   ;)

Uh huh. And, neither of them (or any other closures) had anything at all to do with venture capitalists or financial mismanagement. No, siree.

On those occasions where it allegedly exists, it evidently only flies out of Greater Cincinnati . . .

The Art Institute of Chicago is world renowned. AO Racing is Chicago-based if you’re a fan of dinosaur themed GT race cars.

IF one wants to visit the region without the 500 race, the region within a 500 mile circular from Indy,  is absolutely loaded with the gearhead -trains, planes & automobile - museums and events depending on when one takes in the area.

Down at Madison, Ind. is an Unlimited Hydroplane the day after the 4th of July, which is in a historic town and beautiful area.

I went there, and visited the Indy Museum (for he second time) plus a  LOT  of gear-head museums on the way from and back to Minnesota.

IF you like Fourth of July fireworks, travel at night across mid-Illinois 4th of July evening.

You will be able to watch multiple fireworks shows miles away as mid-Illinois is VERY flat, it was an interesting drive.

500 mile radius? You pass 3 countries here in Europe with such a range.

Just for shits and giggles I checked what I could reach in a 500 mile radius: The UK, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Rain delay may have helped--probably more eyes available later in the afternoon.

Oh well maybe next year . Though i will admit i believe Newgarden  earned this year's win more than last year.

One thing i find somewhat concerning is as i watched parts of the race  the leaders saving gas were turning laps 15 to 20 mph slower than qualification . Which ended up keeping many of the slower cars on the lead lap, which then created a "logjam"  of cars on restarts after a caution. Eventually there will be a pile=up like start of 1966 race  if these conditions continue on a restart.

Multiple fuel strategies also make the race very confusing on who indeed was doin well at times. Sure it allows Robb & Rahal to pick up some laps led but didnt help tell how well they were actually doin.

All in All a decent year but not a great year.

Don't forget that for whatever reason we have that stupid qualifying boost thing so that cars are faster in qualifying due to being way more powerful then they are in race day conditions. Also has an effect on the speed differences in Qualifying and Race.
