Hola, there's another one this weekend! Pato O'Ward's heartbreaking loss to the very intense young man teetering on the edge of comic villainy, Josef Newgarden, can be rectified a mere week after at Roger Penske's own village fete in Detroit. The circuit is a blocky, low-resolution rendering of the unloved old Grand Prix circuit held in the shadow of the big General Motors building in the middle of town. It's very bumpy, doesn't have many corners and goes on for a pleasingly Monaco-like 100 laps. Last year Ganassi's Alex Palou won from pole, initiating his quite-rare-for-Indycar run of three wins in a row. Palou is the championship leader now and hasn't even won three in a row yet.

First practice? Already in the books, yeah, Palou was fastest. He's doing it again. Pato, who crashed last year, was second-fastest. Qualifying is on Saturday, as usual, at 12.15pm EST / 5.15 BST / 6.15 CEST. There will be an Indy NXT race and warm-up session on Sunday morning which will give us a chance to delude ourselves about the near- and far-future. The race, or at any rate the anthem, blessing and whatever is substituted for a flyover, begins at 12 noon / 5pm / 6pm.

See you there?

Simpson and Rahal each have six position starting grid penalties for unapproved engine changes following last week's Indy 500. The Honda joy continues.

Hey, last year’s race here was pretty good, I thought. Maybe we’ll get another good one.

It’s no Belle Isle but it went ok last year. Plus we’ve got that weird double sided pit lane.

Yeah, last year wasn't bad at all and the track has more character than you'd expect looking at the layout.

Yeah my comment above was less about how good the race will be, and more about the stark contrast between the majesty of the Indianapolis Speedway and the er... less salubrious location on the back streets of Detroit.

Hopefully the race will be at least as good as last year.

And... Palou looking ominous.

Detroit is the anti-Monaco, and I’m cool with that.

Ericsson is stuck on pit road with some power issue.

Castroneves is currently 0.8s faster than Tristan Vautier.

Edit: And now Ericsson is on track.

This says that it was Coyne who made contact with Vautier for a possible return: VAUTIER DE RETOUR EN INDYCAR CHEZ DALE COYNE. 3 FRANÇAIS A DETROIT, AVEC GROSJEAN ET POURCHAIRE!

The traffic in the final sector makes Monaco look like a highway.

Wow, Ferrucci got physical when Kirkwood came over to complain about Ferrucci turning in on him.

Not sure if it's more about getting a clear lap in but Canapino and Pourchaire (at least until he stoved it ito the wall) impressing in that session

Nice of Ferrucci to confirm he hasn't really changed at all from the time of his "shenanigans" in Europe.

Considering this video has been posted by IndyCar itself, you can't say racing series DON'T want this stuff to happen from time to time...

(Looking at your glaring hypocrisy regarding Stenhouse vs. Kyle Bush, NASCAR)

Yep, I don't think IndyCar particularly mind too much. The incident is much ado about nothing, frankly. Herta's interview (as others said up the thread) was pretty funny.

However, the "little boyfriend team-mate" comment from Santino is over the line. It's clear he's not learnt from his past mistakes.

Ferrucci's such an unlikable chap. Gets a minor block in practice where the times mean nothing, and reacts like that? What a four letter word.

Kirkwood with a good head on his shoulders.

It really seems he's literally only good at two things

1 being solid at the Indy500

2 being a complete ****

I get the feeling Santino isn't on many drivers' Christmas card lists.
