We are starting this one early, since it seems as if the interest is starting to build-up again, as the inevitability of Verstappen domination doesn't seem strong as it was only few weeks ago. There is chance of 3 different teams going for the win. Or, alternatively always the possibility of Verstappen calmly cruising to pole and winning by 15 seconds again, but it seems just as likely that McLaren or Ferrari might be at the front. The world is changing. There's also other stuff happening at the back. Perhaps Magnussen behaves. And Ocon. Or not.

 

It's also one of the more popular events on the calendar as it's currently sits as your 7th favorite GP of the year (on my Autosport ranking thread), too!

CAN I SEE THE SUPPORT RACES

 

Why, yes. This year there are no F1600s, historics, Nissans or other specials sadly, the only two support series are Euro marques (same as in Japan). But nevertheless it is probably the two biggest one-make sportscar series in NA that are here. And Ferrari has  new car for the North American series this year, 296 Challenge.

Forecast is still too far out to predict with accuracy but overall we can expect it to be grey and wet across several points of the weekend. If it stays as it is by Wednesday then we can expect a very tricky weekend.

That's great! Apparently, there's been tarmac there since 2013.

From Alonso's onboard you can see there was still grass in 2012.

Fantastic atmosphere, and an F1 classic, bring it on! There is something I would like to see changed though, and that is the DRS. First of all, the single detection point for two zones is ridiculous and should NEVER be used. Secondly, it's too powerful down the back straight.

I would like to see a new zone added before the hairpin and getting rid of the big one at the back straight. Let's see if we can see some proper outbraking instead of fly-bys.

Riding the kerbs is still important in the wet, and we saw in China that the Red Bull doesn't get heat into the tyres that well. McLaren could come into play..

With grass now added to another chicane, that means all the chicanes apart from the last one have grass. Hopefully they can do similar for the final chicane and turn 1/2.

Anyway looks like weather is changing right before the weekend. Cold front moving in with lots of precipitation. But maybe too early to tell how much it rains and when.

Because, I have no idea when it emerged as a reliable source for "the world". I see ut on other motorsport forums as well. It's always being used. While I'm not always trusting it for local forecasts

Whenever they turn up at the top of the timesheets I still can't help but think, "oh - McLaren are quick! That's a nice surprise", even though it's pretty obvious beforehand.

I think that's a pretty fair reflection of the general conversation, listening to podcasts etc. And to be honest, I prefer it that way - low expectations and high results 

 

It's when people start predicting McLaren to win that I get nervous. 

 

As for performing better in the wet/cold - I would have said these conditions benefit McLaren more than any other team on the evidence of the past few seasons, however I'm no longer sure that's the case with the latest updates. Hopefully we have an exciting grand prix weekend to find out.
