Silly Season started!
Jake Hughes set to exit McLaren, towards Maserati?
https://www.the-race...la-e-explained/
Wonderkid Taylor barnard seems to be the favourite for the McLaren seat nowù
Also, Dan Ticktum could be a free agent this summer, can't see him staying at ERT one more season and he had offers already

Ticktum has been pretty useless this season and given his reputation for being an ass I'd struggle to see who would want him. I know ERT haven't been exactly stellar this year either so perhaps he has performed well but been hampered by the car, yet he only outscored Sette Camera by 1 point over the season.

Even if Ticktum had Verstappen levels of talent (which he assuredly doesn't), I'm not sure I'd take him.

They were impressive in 2023 as they'd throw the car up the grid in qualifying, and then hang on through sheer stubbornness as long as they could in the race. But Nico Mueller did the same thing this year, without having to be a head case in the process (SSC wasn't being one either, mind you).
Posted 23 July 2024 - 17:42
To be fair Ticktum is keeping quite a low profile in FE.
Maybe cause he found even more aggressive guys than him to race with!
I think he has the speed (same as Sette Camara), so would be nice to see either of them in a more competitive seat.

Seems like Envision is retaining Buemi-Frijns, so no space for Vandoorne there i guess!

Andretti-Porsche: Jake Dennis – Nico Müller
Envision-Jaguar: Robin Frijns - Sébastien Buemi

I find it interesting that Mueller, Sette-Camara and Ticktum seem better at this than drivers with far more success in good cars like Di Grassi, Frijns, Mortara and De Vries.
I think it's a bit psychological. If you've always been racing for underdogs, you understand the mentality you need. I think drivers who come from experiences in very well-resourced teams leads to less appetite for aggressive risk taking as you don't have the same understanding that you need to take every opportunity because that might be the only one. Also, that group of drivers has a couple who very much do not like the Gen3 experience at all, which will affect things.

Weren't the Envision drivers confirmed earlier this week?
Not officially, but it's been informally confirmed. And Rowland and Bird are the same.

Daruvala out of the series or he'll manage to get a seat elsewhere?
Wasn't a super impressive season

Interesting reprieve for Vandoorne, he actually ends up driving for the same powertrain.
But a fresh enviroment, and probably a slightly easier teammate to face, but losing to Vergne is one thing, but Hughes would be a challenge to his future in FE.
Likewise Hughes, he looked quick on occasion at McLaren, but things never really came together.

Admittedly I haven't been following FE as much as before, but the driver movements these days are pretty random, it seems - almost like meanwhile pretty much every driver has driven for pretty much every team at some point And some of them hold on to a spot in the series for WAY too long without ever really performing well or doing much to justify it

My equally subjective impression is that the same drivers are milling around the teams, rather than new ones being introduced. Would have expected more churn, given the large supply of "not quite in F1" drivers in the world.

I think the challenge of the series being rather unique gives it a unique bias towards incumbents. Also, a lot of team managers seem to feel that the reason these drivers might be on the market was more that their previous team failed them, rather than the driver failed the team.

Not basing this on any news, but Nissan could do worse than admitting they got rid of the wrong guy and hire Nato back.

So, right now I think the grid is looking like:
Porsche: Wehrlein, Da Costa
Jaguar: Evans, Cassidy
DS-Penske: Verne, Guenther
Maserati: Vandoorne, Hughes
Envision: Buemi, Frijns
Andretti: Dennis, Muller?
Nissan: Rowland, Fenestraz?
McLaren: Bird, Barnard?
Mahindra: De Vries, Mortara
Abt-Lola-Yamaha: Di Grassi, ?
ERT: Ticktum?, Sette Camara?

He's clearly good enough, but keeps being the victim of circumstance at every team he goes to. It's a bizarre pattern.

To be fair, Nato hasn't exactly had a great season, so his time might rightfully be expiring in FE. As it is, it's surprising how little influx of NEW drivers there is in the series at the moment... seems like the same old suspects just moving around, without really having achieved much to justify remaining.

With the focus on energy saving and platoon racing, especially on racetracks, experience trumps youth.

I rate Muller very high, some of his drives with ABT Cupra this season have been stunning.
Great lineup at Andretti!
