Race Day at the Hungaroring:

(image view F1.com on twitter)

I rather miss the days when this race was the last one before F1 half term. Seemed to coincide with a lot of off-track drama, I suspect because people would let their guard down a little too early, but now we have Spa before the break? Seems unnatural, surely Spa should be the curtain raiser for the second half (if you forgive the mixed metaphor). ANYWAY...

Starting with a McLaren front row lockout:

When is it on?

Look it up on the graphic for your time zone:

I think everyone agrees that yellow numbers on a white background are the best for readability. right? but just in case, it's 2PM BST, 3PM local.

Other news

The FIA has replaced part of the grass strip at the Hungaroring’s Turn 5 after it contributed to Yuki Tsunoda’s qualifying crash.

Tyres

Pirelli Motorsport
The#HungarianGP is a race where the classic two-stop is the clear favourite. On paper, the quickest option is to start on the Medium before then bringing in the Hard. Clearly, the number of available sets of these two harder compounds will determine the teams’ decisions.

Cool. How many does each team have? I DON'T KNOW. That info always seems very hard to find ahead of time, please do add it into the comments if you know! Enjoy the race!

Is it gonna be scorching hot? And how about rain, any chance of that or nah?

Haven’t been to the Hungaroring since the days of Erotic Camping.

Lando's race to lose again.  Lets see what he can manage this time round.

Whats the weather got to do today?   PSC looks dry and overcast at the moment.   Not sure on air temp or track temp.

My ideal result is a McLaren 1-2 with a Max DNF, to bring the title race alive and force Red Bull's hand on sacking Perez.

I agree totally about Spa

Having it at the end of 5 races in 6 weeks feels too much in a way, it's a classic circuit that could be scheduled at a time where fans feel a bit 'fresher'

Still miss JB on the grid. Still pissed McLaren & Honda weren't able to give him and Alonso a proper car. Offtopic rant over.

Having watched an analysis of the quali laps, Verstappen lost 3 tenths to the McLarens in the chicane. That is an insane loss in just a few meters of race track, their issue with low speed corners and kerbs is truly an Achilles heel. Having said that, pace looks great elsewhere and in the race the McLaren drivers won't be attacking that chicane as aggressively so I actually think Verstappen has more than a decent chance here. Degradation will of course be key and with RedBull focusing so much on long runs both on Friday and Saturday, I think this might actually not be Lando's race to lose. Let's see.

I do, because they've started fixing many other asphalt runoff filled circuits but only done half-assed job at Hungaroring

Of course Porsches always run wide everywhere anyway

Apparently RedBull have 2 fresh mediums, so Max has an advantage here, while McLaren have only one set of fresh mediums, if these guys are to be believed:

Yes, they scrubbed a set of hard and mediums in FP3. Max and McLarens will most likely go with medium-hard-medium strategy.

Russell will definitely start on the hards, but I wonder if Ham should do the same. Surely having a medium for the final stint would be preferable, but at the same time you wouldn't wanna start on the hards and have an awful launch off the line

Thing is,  Mclaren have to alternate one of the cars to force RBR's hand into something.    A example of simply copying RBR 1 lap later isnt going to work when you have 2 cars vs 1.

Not sure if this official one is exactly the same. McLarens lack of tyres is disturbing.

Like a smooth operator once said: "Stop inventing"

He will need a tyre that can fight and win the Ferraris from the start.

How used is used though?  It could be just 1 outlap I'm not sure

Yeah, it's all about looking after tyres and strategy. If McLaren drivers stay 1-2, Lando will disappear in the distance after a few laps. Oscar needs to make sure he looks after his tyres and force Max into some kind of an error.

So, SC is in the game too.

Key question is....does Oscar have the talent to keep Max behind him.   Max will get a overtake done when its needed.

Likely not the pace.

Oscar hasnt really had any 'hard' battles with anyone yet I dont think.

A mid field driver is a little bit different to having Max Verstappen in your mirrors taking every opportunity there is to try and pass.

He has had many ‘hard’ battles with Sainz :p

Piastri finished on the podium multiple times and won a sprint race. This is only his 2nd season and he’s already been performing well. Everything except his tyre management is top level.

Does this track still have that water park? Always made a fun distraction from the race for the TV director if things got slow.

Piastri had many tangles with Lewis.

Throttle issues for both Lando and Lewis, is it heat-related I wonder?

Nope, Bono says no problems for Lewis.

Throttle issue, they had to replace the dampers.
