Lotus Electre EV mega suv test

Autocar magazine has just tested the new Lotus Electre electric  SUV - . link below.

 

Several things 

 

- It weighs 2762 kg, or more than  three Lotus Elises .

 

- So even Lotus can't make it handle like an Elise!

 

- It has staggering performance 0 to 100mph in 6.5 seconds and 0 to 150 mph in 16.2 seconds. That is identical to the legendary McLaren F1 super car which had  620 bhp and 1100 kg of weight.. The Electre has 900+ bhp to help it

 

- I have read that most EV's lose performance as the battery runs down but I hadn't realised just how much until Autocar kindly measured the Electre's 0 to 100 mph time at 10% charge. It goes out to 24.1 seconds! That is a four fold loss of aceleration from full to 10% battery level 

 

- I dont know if the loss of accelersion is linear but if it is then at 50% charge it would do 0 to 100 mph in about 16.5 seconds which is  slower than a BMW 330 saloon!

 

I actualy saw one at recent Historic Lotus Register meeting it is HUGE and that one ws in bright yellow as well .

The weight might be most unLeotus like but so is teh interior quality. It realy is stunning inside

Unlikely to be a linear loss of power with battery charge. In fact such a large power reduction at 10% charge is unlikely to be loss of battery power potential - rather the software reducing power to protect the battery.

Multiple Eletre's. Are they called Lotus Eletri? Loti Eletri?
 
In all honesty, its a fantastic move by Lotus to build an SUV (okay its an cross over). And going electric is suiting the current market. But what I am not really sure about, is how you will justify the price that is 20k higher than the Q8 E-tron of Audi or the EQC400 of Mercedes? Which are similar sized cars and are only down a bit in power. But not with a margin that justifies that extra money. Let alone the fact that those cars are built upon a proven platform. This opposed to the heavily modified Geely SEA platform, that is now dubbed the EPA platform, that the Eletre is build upon.
 
But the possibility of 350kwh charging, the light weight of the car (certainly compared to the earlier mentioned ones), the performance and the potential distance of just shy of 500km on one charge (a magic threshold in my book) make it a car with very much potential. Fast forward 2 years and I am very curious how the Eletre will stack up against the E-tron or the EQC. Or even the new Maccan. It could very well be a hit. Despite the price.

Like I said, it is very light weight compared to other cars in the same segment. Look at the Q8 E-tron or the EQC400 and you will see that it is still over 500kgs(!!!) lighter. In this segment, the Eletre is still a Lotus as it always was meant to be; light weight.

No. Hard fail.

 

 

Our test car wasn’t as efficient as key rivals we have tested. Of the R, owners should expect 225 miles of mixed-use real-world range, where some big electric SUVs (BMW iX, Mercedes EQS SUV, Kia EV9) are much more likely to tiptoe towards and beyond the 300-mile marker.

Charging speed was fleetingly fast. Our test car hit a peak DC rapid-charging speed of 348kW but didn’t maintain anything like that beyond 25% state of charge and ultimately fell some way short of the fastest weighted average charging speeds we've recorded.

The R has that range, yes. The standard Eletre manages those 500km.

You have to distinguish between WLTP range and real world range. Autocar staed that no matter the WLTP range, the Lotus wasn't as efficient as it's rivals. It's there in black and white. 

 

But if a Eletre rocks your boat, be my guest. I would also use subjective criterias if I was in the market. Everybody and his dog, know that Tesla's are the best for charging, peformance and range. I still wouldn't buy it.

Real world range is very very VERY subjective to any condition. That is why WLTP is the only fair way of comparing because that is done via a standardised test that is uniformly executed over all manufacturers. But indeed, it is not anywhere near what you will get in real life. But that 500km threshold of WLTP range is somewhat magic in my book. That usually means you will get 400km out of one charge. Which is for me the perfect amount to last me a week of commuter and private driving.

Maybe! Park it away from a plug for 48 hours at -38°....
