I'm actually shocked no-one has talked about this here. Granted, it wasn't that greatly covered in motorsport media over the last weekend (except for brief appearance as motorsport.com headline article) as the series in question was "only" NLS/VLN, but it's still pretty notable and sad

The latest news from the series is that the explosion – caused by a compressed air bottle – injured 22 people, four of them seriously.

Very unfortunate.

Gas canisters can be extremely dangerous. Lucky nobody was killed.

Wow, that’s terrible and the first I’ve heard about it. Wishing everyone a good recovery.

Pressurized cylinders always make me nervous because you never know who's been handling them. Hopefully everyone is OK and no lasting physical or hearing damage.

I work with gas cylinders often as I work in engineering. If they are well maintained and used correctly with regularly serviced regulators, use of gas cylinders SHOULDN'T go wrong, but unfortunately it cannot be guaranteed. In most cases you're relying on the supplier maintaining safe practices, but also you have to make sure your own equipment has regular safety checks. Hopefully this hasn't happened due to negligence or complacency, but it's unfortunately a likely cause...
