What other progeny of wider motorsport champions are on the path to F1?
Probably a bit late for Brittany Force to make a circuit racing switch.
Tom Blomqvists ascension stalled dramatically this year.

Good stuff, glad he’s got a seat. Looking forward to seeing him in F1.

He is quicker than his ultimate F2 results show.
Didn't expect him to get to F1, but the way it works sometimes just falls nicely, i.e Ocon leaving and an unclear future with Alpine project overall
He seems a logical choice for the team under the circumstances

Cool to see a new face on the grid. I don't think he'll be much better than Sargeant though.

Oh yeah, we’ll need to reestablish who’s the ‘runt’ next year
Mick Schumi or Doohan?
Bearman has something of the (Jan) Magnussen about him for me too

Good to see somebody new get a chance. Hopefully he won't be another Sargeant.

Very glad to see he got the chance. I really believe Jack will surprise some people next year.

I think that's a lazy comparison. While being in F2 longer, Doohan had more poles, more wins, more spark. He didn't fulfil his potential, but his highs were higher. Doohan's pace shouldn't be a problem. He'll have to aim to keep the mistakes down.

Extremely likeable like his dad, hopefully as fast too

Another door closes for Bottas, only hope for him now is that he keeps his seat at Sauber/Audi, but might they be tempted to bring in a rookie too. They certainly seem happy to take their time to make a decision, and they are effectively the last seat up for grabs.

Remember having the exact same conversation with someone when Sargeant was promoted to Williams. Said he won't be any better than Latifi, was told something similar. We shall see, but again someone who didn't really come close to winning a title is promoted to F1 in place of people who have won it. His ceiling is literally Guanyu Zhou imho.

Maybe. But Sargeant also had poles and victories in his one full season, and finished one point behind the very highly rated Lawson, who was in his second year. Thing is, Sargeant shouldn't really have shown as badly as he has turned out to be. Mick Schumacher didn't set the world alight. Zhou has dropped liked a stone. All recent converts from F2 with victories and poles to their name, who were decent, but didn't show much in F1. Doohan is in the same 'decent' bracket, but hopefully he can break through unlike the others. Piastri is finally showing good pace, but still looks a little patchy and a step behind Norris, and he's the next big thing of recent F2 converts, which Doohan certainly isn't.

I think he’ll be ok. He seems to have been thoroughly prepared by Alpine for an F1 drive.

Nice. Having no new drivers for 2024 sucked. Nice to have another new face on the grid. I remember watching him in F4. Nice to seem him make it. Hope he has a good debut and Alpine don’t drop the ball again.
Nice to see you, to see you nice

Time for me to ask a stupid question. Last time we had 3 Aussies in F1 (assuming Ricciardo lands somewhere)?

It seems that Alpine have made fools of themselves once again.
It's also pretty telling that they prefer one of many drivers without much F1 experience over Schumacher.

Good to see some new talent on the grid. I don't think Doohan's junior career was especially impressive - has he ever actually won a championship? - but I hope he does well nonetheless.

Alan Jones, Vern Schuppan and Brian McGuire (DNQ) at the 1977 British GP. Larry Perkins also competed in other races that year.

You have to go back to the year before to find three Australians starting a GP - Alan Jones, Warwick Brown and Larry Perkins at Watkins Glen in 1976. At this tage I'd be pretty surprised if Ricciardo gets another season though.

Feels like me like the next decent but not great driver, like Schumacher, Latifi, de Vries, Ericsson, Wehrlein. Etcetera. Happy to be wrong.

I have a feeling they just replaced okay journeyman Ocon with okay journeyman Doohan. Although it still takes more than Latifi or Sargeant level to reach okay journeyman status so we'll see.
You're selling Ocon short. Ocon might be an "okay journeyman" compared to the Verstappens of this grid, but his level was still pretty high and not obtainable in the driver market right now for them. A downgrade was inevitable, assuming that's the case it's not too bad to get someone with potential.

My fear is that he may turn out to be Jolyon Palmer 2.0.

Good for Doohan and under the circumstances of now being in the race seat, probably not a better teammate to work with than Gasly.

Really surprised to see so many (selection above) who are comparing Doohan with Sargeant. In particular the third one, the bit in bold. Doohan would have been a title contender in F2 last season if not for a broken chassis in the early rounds. If you exclude the rounds he ran with the broken chassis, he scored more points than anyone else. He "didn't really come close" not because of a lack of talent and pace, but because of equipment issues outside of his control.

These two are a bit more reasonable comments. Personally, my feeling is that Doohan is clearly not on Piastri's level. But he does have the potential to be a long term addition to the grid if the stars align for him. I think he'll surprise a few people who've commented in this thread next season.

As with others I think he’s a pretty average driver who will quickly be shuffled through and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone after 2025 itself.
That said F1 needs to have this conveyer belt of guys coming in and getting a chance to show what they can do

If Douhan is as good as Ocon, he is a find.

I just realized Alpine's options were MotoGP champion's son, WRC champion's son and F1 champion's son.

1994 and 1995 were close that all of them would have won titles. Carlos senior had a chance in final round and was leading the battle for some time but in the end lost, while Michael and Mick won titles in their respective classes.

And the F1 champion's son is named after the MotoGP champion, who lost out on the seat to said MotoGP champion's son.
