After four weeks off, it's time to go racing - 40 minutes to lights out!

Can Lando convert pole to victory, or will Max prevail in front of his home fans? Piastri and Russell look set to fight for the final podium place, with Sainz and Hamilton out of position and fighting back through for points. Albon P19 after qualifying DSQ, and Magnussen from the pit lane.

High potential for turn one drama with this front row.

It looked a bit precarious on the banking.

Assuming they get through T1 in starting order it should be a simple 1-2 for McLaren using the pit stops to undercut or overcut Piastri into P2.

Even if Verstappen gets the lead through say a well timed safety car, the McLarens should be able to follow through the corners and DRS past.

Is it just me or the forums felt been a little flat this weekend

Seems like some people have not woken up to f1 again after the summer break

I'm interested to see if Mclaren can start to make their mark on the WCC today

I wonder if Perez can get a solid result

@LukeSmithF1

Grandstands upstanding and waving flags to the PA chant of “Max! Max! Max!” - still 45 mins to lights out but already atmosphere building on the grid.

Sky talking about the banking.

IMO, progressive banking should be used where the angle of banking get higher towards the outside of the corner. This would helping in creating more viable lines through a single corner.

Its bank holiday in the UK so I guess a lot of people are on holiday, or enjoying the end of the summer holidays for our European members.

Thanks.

A late call, just popped up now as far as I can see, well at least he will not be involved in the 1st corner fracas, in case there is a 1st corner fracas.

When did the preamble for a GP turn into a music festival?

Last time I went to a race the build up was just the commentator giving village notices over the Tannoy.

This 'music' is annoying me on the tv. If I was there I would hate it.

I agree. It took till Thursday evening for the Buildup Thread to be released. For the main event after the summer break, that's a bit long. Perhaps it's the Grand Prix/circuit itself which people do not warm up to. I don't know.

They've done this well with turn 3 where it's progressive (using the Fibonacci scale).

The banking at Madrid will be 30 degrees - not sure if that will be linear or not.

Isn’t that what they’ve done here? That’s why the racing line at Hugenholz is round the outside.

It has been since the first modern edition.

Edit; and the music is that loud, it surpasses the cars in loudness. I have more problems hearing what other people have to say when the music is playing rather than when cars are passing by.

We live in a forum where anyone are more than welcome to create the Buildup Thread, I like how it is a motely crew who take alternating GP's doing so, we can all step up if we want it there.

They were focusing on the final corner which I think is a flat 19 degrees?

I know Kwissen. But the fact no one took the effort, says a lot I think. I even had half a draft ready on Monday and was "meh, I'm going to mow the lawn." and subsequently forgot all about it.

Surely it’s open enough that it’s essentially a straight?

I think Max will be very hard to beat if he gets the jump at the start, despite the slight car disadvantage.

This is Verstappens 200th F1 Grid Prix, that makes me both feel old and a bit lost, i'm still in wrong era where reaching 200 seemed a rare thing.

Quite. I still see him as one of the "new" generation, yet that is positively veteran levels of starts.

I have this as a Max win. Lando/Mclaren always seems to have a mistake, a poor decision waiting to happen. Max/Red Bull don't make many mistakes.

Of course it could all go wrong into turn 1 for one or both of the front row.

As McLaren has by far the best car, this would make the WDC and WCC less interesting... :p

On the flip side, McLaren right now are RB for the 18 months before - can follow through the corners and fastest in a straight line so it’s hard to see how Verstappen could hold them off

Thing is, even of you ignore the number of races per season, Max is in his 10th season of F1. He’s in the equivalent of Senna’s 1993 or Prost’s 1989.

Yes it will be difficult, but Max will make that car very wide if he gets in front, and he can make the difference here too. It's that kind of circuit.

Anyway, we will know in a couple of hours! It should be a good one.

Everyone on Mediums apart from Tsunoda, Hamilton, Bottas on Softs and Magnussen on Hards

Surprised with Hamilton tbh. Thought he'd want to save them for later instead of burning them up in traffic.

Sorry Dutch Verstappen fans, but this time no Dutchman on the podium. My prediction:

P1. Lando

P2. Oscar

P3. George (who pips VER via a 1 stopper)

Lewis will have a great race with multiple overtakes and will be driver of the day!

Well yes, just 10 years when I watched them as a child seemed to be an eternity and now 10 years seems to flash by.
