Engine manufacturers Honda and Alpine have both committed a “procedural breach” of the Formula 1 cost-cap regulations, says governing body the FIA.

Honda is the partner of world champions Red Bull while Alpine is the supplier for the Renault-owned team of the same name.

A statement from the FIA did not detail the specifics of the breaches, which took place in the 2023 season, but said neither had exceeded the spending limit.

A procedural breach typically would revolve around discrepancies in the filing of financial information.

The FIA said that both Honda and Alpine had “acted at all times in good faith” and were “co-operating” with the FIA’s cost-cap administration team “to finalise the matter”.

The FIA said it was proposing that both enter into a so-called ‘accepted breach agreement’, meaning the competitor agrees they have broken the rules and accepts some form of sanction.

It does raise the interesting question of what would happen if the PU manufacturer did breach the cost cap. Would it affect team results in any way?

It does raise the interesting question of what would happen if the PU manufacturer did breach the cost cap. Would it affect team results in any way?

Several penalties are possible including points deduction for driver and teams. It is possible to make a distinction between the nominated team and the customer team. In case of a procedural breach there need to be aggravating elements before it can effect the team.

 

Oh and maybe i should add that this is only possible from 2026 and further

What I hate about this is the lack of transparency from the FIA about the actual violations (Did the numbers between Viry-Châtillon and Enstone not match at first? Or they came a bit late? Etc.     )

 

 

The good thing is that all is OK now, but after the Piastri Debacle, 'Alpine' and 'administrative issues' is not something pleasant... nor all that surprising.

We will know more (obviously not everyting) when they enter an ABA.

As stated above ... the point is that the FIA can impose a fine on the teams (meaning the FIA will have more, much-needed, cash).
