The 2008 Firestone Indy 200, where the eternal Scott Dixon yet again made off with the win:

2008 race highlights:

Spoiler

The essentials:

  • Practice 1: 11:00 ET / 16:00 BST.
  • Qualifying: 14:15 ET / 19:15 BST.
  • High-line practice: 17:15 ET / 22:15 BST.
  • Final practice: 18:00 ET / 23:00 BST.
  • Race coverage: 15:00 ET / 20:00 BST.
  • Green, green, green: 15:30 ET / 20:30 BST.

Spotter guide:

2.png

The lowdown:

Penske have dominated the championship, and yet Ganassi's Palou is the favourite to swipe it from under the Captain's nose.

The DJ has had his best season on pace for perhaps a decade, but mistakes have seen the consistency of Palou take the points lead into Nashville.

Due to IndyCar's unfathomable points system, the title permutations are... complicated. But in short, Power must finish in the top three to have a realistic chance.

54 points are on offer to Power. Palou needs 22 to guarantee the title, achieved with a minimum ninth-place finish.

In the meantime, whet your appetite for the finale with the very best highlights of the 2024 season:

Spoiler

How I smite thee, NFL. Enjoy the race, IndyFans.

It's just a highlight real of Newgarden choking!  But seriously, Power vs Palou for the title is the fairest outcome, although I think the fight will be more of a damp squib than a clash for the ages.

There is an interesting what-if though if some events went the other way, but we can have fun exploring all of that in the off-season.  For now, let's see what sport the Indycar gods make of this field.

I know the OP says Power needs to finish in the top three for a realistic chance but I'd say he needs to finish in the top three for a mathematical chance, and the top two for a realistic chance...

Alex Palou and Scotty McLaughlin both have engine changes for this weekend and will take 9 place grid penalties for the race:

https://x.com/JennaF...712794643464436

Obviously makes things a bit more risky for Palou's championship starting back in the pack a bit, even if he poles qualy. May also hit Scott's hopes of finishing P2 in the championship.

I believe Alex Rossi also takes a new engine this weekend and will also receive a 9 place grid drop as a result.

Another one for Palou? That's rough luck, and really could have title-deciding implications.

Not meaning to be harsh but I find it very weird how Legge at 44 and with over a decade out of Indycar (bar an Indy 500) has suddenly found some funding to trundle around at the back a long way off the pace. Of course we would all do it if we could but I’m not exactly sure what’s in it for her at this point  :|

Yeah, Legge's participation this year (besides the 500, which makes sense) is a bit of a strange one. I like seeing her on the grid, but I wish she was in better form.

Today's Nashville forecast from NOAA.gov:

Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 7am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 7am and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. East southeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

Lower % chance of rain tomorrow but still not great.  With the (limited) racing + concert model that's a tough forecast for the intrepid fans.  Downtown would seem to have offered more poor weather running and shelter options, unfortunate how that played out.  That bonkers street course in the rain for a title decider could have been maximum IndyCar..!

An oval at this time of year is probably a risk anywhere in the US except the Southwest, like Phoenix or LV (or Fontana, in olden times) and neither option works for IndyCar these days.  Although the weather in Loudon, NH today (not far from me) promises to be cool and clear... but we've had uniquely clear dry weather here for the past few weeks.

Fingers crossed the skies will clear a bit ahead of that forecast.

Big hit for Siegel. He's ok. You could see the bump on the track from the onboard, that's probably gonna be a challenge this weekend.

She’s been racing consistently though all that time and has long been a solid sportscar hand. As said we would all do it if offered it just feels a bit unsatisfying running around in last off the pace.

The Sarge at the track sniffing around for a gig.  Except for perhaps Prema don't see him getting a spot without bringing dough or a sponsor.  Next up Frankie Cola in Sebring pre season looking for work.

Good to hear from Roger Yasukawa.

The tech that was shown by McLaren in F1 (i.e. rolling sponsors on the halo) has apparently made its way in IndyCar (Juncos Hollinger, of all teams).
