I was there. It was a beautiful day. As an American the genuine respect and admiration for Dan Gurney, especially by Lord March (as he was at the time), was gratifying.

And even this year there was a "VV Gurney" painted on the start/finish straight at Revival.

Yes, I believe it’s been there since 2012.

I think every year, before proceedings begin, when no one is looking, the Dook creeps quietly out of his house with a paintbrush

Sue Weaver has asked me to post these images of Dan and other personalities whom she captured at Goodwood those few years back...they include many of my favourite folk amongst the bygone racing fraternity.
Bob and Pat Bondurant
Jochen Mass
Brian Redman with Scott George of the Revs Institute/Collier Collection
And...guess who...

Did I not used to hear my Granny utter the phrase “Don’t forget the driver”?
So,
the other Old Man,
Tony Brooks-equally courageous and skilful.

I’ll never forget my conversation in the paddock with John Surtees the year he was honored driver. He was standing near his BMW 507, being more or less ignored by others near him, so….. Quite uncharacteristic of me, I approached him with,
Good morning. You won the first important race I ever saw in person.
Really? Which one?
Sebring, 1963.
Would you like to hear some stories about that race?
He generously went on for about 20 minutes. It was an important race in many ways, breaking new ground with and for Ferrari; his relationship with Dragoni; Phil Hill’s first international event post-Ferrari, etc. To hear it all directly from him was a privilege.

Nice to see Scott George as one of those in the photos, truly one of The Good Guys in my book.
