I was there.  It was a beautiful day. As an American the genuine respect and admiration for Dan Gurney, especially by Lord March (as he was at the time), was gratifying.

And even this year there was a "VV Gurney" painted on the start/finish straight at Revival.

Looking through Keith Bluemel's excellent book "Enzo's Ultimate Redhead", I don't think so. That appears to be chassis 0766 at Sebring 1959 where it won. The car at Goodwood in the opening post is 0744.

I’ll never forget my conversation in the paddock with John Surtees the year he was honored driver.  He was standing near his BMW 507, being more or less ignored by others near him, so…..  Quite uncharacteristic of me, I approached him with,

 

Good morning.  You won the first important race I ever saw in person.

 

Really?  Which one?

 

Sebring, 1963.

 

Would you like to hear some stories about that race?

 

He generously went on for about 20 minutes.  It was an important race in many ways, breaking new ground with and for Ferrari; his relationship with Dragoni; Phil Hill’s first international event post-Ferrari, etc.  To hear it all directly from him was a privilege.
