Not sure where else to share this, but thought it might be of interest to any forum members with kids (or, alternatively, those - like me - who have never fully grown up  ) - F1 has announced a partnership with Lego from 2025. 

 

Two of the world’s most recognised brands, Formula 1® and LEGO Group have announced an exciting new partnership that will see the launch of F1-inspired LEGO® products for builders of all ages. The range will include LEGO® DUPLO® sets for pre-school children alongside brick sets for both children and adult builders.  

 

Launching in 2025, the world of Formula 1 will come alive in LEGO brick form through an exciting new product range that will feature the Formula 1 teams, as well as engaging content for fans and families across LEGO’s digital platforms and a strong presence at Formula 1 events with fun Fan Zone activations throughout the season.

As a big fan of the existing Speed Champions range (I currently have the recently released Ferrari F40 model on my desk) - I have to say, I'm quite excited by this! Please tell me I'm not the only one...

As long as it is a better job then what they did with the Mclaren MP4/4 which got identical size wheels front and rear ......

 

In my room I have two own design Le Mans cars, (an open top spyder and a Bentley Speed8 equivalent) as well as how my design Gp B Rallycar would have looked like and an app 1:20 or thereabout model of the 1963 Novi driven by Jim Hurtubise.

 

I don't know how often as a child I've built Ferrari 312T's and Tyrrell 6-wheelers  (back then i still liked Tyrrell) before demolishing them again because I built something else again

There was a period where the grandkids were getting me Speed Champions as gifts.  It would usually be two, one to build, one to keep sealed in the box.  Among them a Ferrari F1 car.  We’ve got a Lego owned store in a swanky mall on the Strip and out in the well healed ‘burbs.  They usually have some of the more difficult kits to get.  At one point they had a large Hamilton Mercedes F1 car.  It was a couple hundred bucks.  They also have McLaren F1 as well as some WEC/IMSA cars and exotic street cars.  The P1 is $450.  Wish they had a Senna or a Murcielago.

Also, Lego-adjacent, since we're talking about scale models, basically, but late releases in this year's Hot Wheels line include a Porsche 904 and a Lotus 49.  I haven't yet seen them in stores, but I'm hopeful.

I'd be really surprised if we get the entire grid in Speed Champions style. I have the McLaren, don't really have much interest in the Aston Martin because it's 95% the same parts, just a different colour.
I'd get a Ferrari if they make one, but I can't really see the less-known teams selling particularly well. Then again they will probably be extremely cheap to manufacture, since they only need to change the colour of the bricks and the sticker sheet between models.

Loved Hot Wheels too! I've still got a suitcase full in storage that I've never been able to part with. I remember when Hot Wheels was making F1 cars from the early 2000s - I managed to collect two Ferraris, a McLaren, Renault, Jordan and Williams.

This has brought back some memories - I had that car!

I also had the Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello minifigures/podium set. 

 

I know minifigures are often very collectable, and I wonder if they'll do something next year along the lines of those mystery minifigure packs including famous drivers throughout the decades? I imagine they would be quite popular...

I loved Lego as a kid and thanks in large part to my Son (who’s late 20’s now and never stopped making Lego models) I’ve developed a serious mid-life Lego addiction. I have a lot of the Speed Champions and will be picking up the large Mercedes W14.

 

These are my favourites though. They are designs by RoscoPC an absolute artist of a MoC Lego designer who’s designs were put into production by a Chinese company who promptly ripped him off and didn’t pay any license for using his work.  If you buy the (wonderful) stickers from him then you can show your appreciation for them.  He does some incredible designs.

As a person who gave Lego probably tens of thousands of bucks over the years - ***c the price of Lego nowadays. Now I'm exploring Aliexpress or Temu where you can find the whole sets of fake Lego for like 30% of the price of the regular ones. The quality of the bricks is almost indistinguishable:

Yeah - given the well-known poor quality of many Temu items (they're cheap for a reason), I'd much rather stick with the real deal rather than some cheap knock-off. 

 

I don't find the price of Speed Champions sets unreasonable - but then I only tend to buy them occasionally as a treat, otherwise I'd rapidly run out of space to keep them.

In the end it's just plastic. Spending $280 on a set that you can have for just $50 of the exactly the same model and parts (apart from the lego logos you cant tell the difference from the originals when you're holding the fake brick in your hands) is just too good of a deal imho.

I have a Lego McLaren mp4/4 but haven’t built it yet, needs some aftermarket good size wheels, some other parts and decals. It will probably build into a decent display kit. On sale it usually goes for around 50-55 euros which is a pretty good price I think.

 

though I personally prefer building plastic models. Just recently built a Fujimi mp4/6 1:20 scale which was a great experience. And have quite a few different models in stash.

Ill bet you that those knockoffs will have knibbled on the cost which will cause a higher degradation and has less UV tolerance than the bricks of Lego themselves. The wife has been buying some "Temu sets" for the little one and yes I agree, at first glance they look fantastic. But some fake Lego have been sitting in the sun and the color has faded away much more than one would expect with Lego. Same goes for it being more brittle. Ive been demolishing some buildings and Ive cracked a couple of bricks already.

 

If one accounts for this and takes it for granted, then yes ofcourse this is a fantastic option. And some sets are near identical to their Lego counterpart. But as a pure bred Lego fanatic since the 80s, Ive kept all the fake Lego seperated from the two 60 gallon rain barrels of Lego that I have accumulated over the years. The only parts in my collection which are not original Lego, are my hundreds of rails for my original 9v train sets which are aftermarket from FX Track. They simply do not corrode and offer more realistic radii to play with for your layout. Also the 20 motors Ive horded are all refurbished to last longer. If you are not attached to 9v but simply to more modern systems, then TrixBrix.eu is the place to go for you. Much more elaborate junctions, switches, better radii and various bricks that complement any rail build. But that is as far as I will go for any fake Lego myself.

I'm hoping there will be at least one technic set coming out.

And preferably at least 3000-4000 pieces, like the Ferrary Daytona SP3 and Lamborghini Sian. Those were awesome to build. I'm also going to buy the McLaren P1, i love to build those cars during the christmas holidays. 

The current McLaren F1 (set 42141) and Mercedes F1 (set 42171) only have about 1400-1600 pieces.

The MP4/4 doesn't look quite right with those wheels - hopefully next year's wave will include some chunkier rear tyres so they're a bit more in proportion.
