It's still "Ireland" on most maps, so I'd argue that it's not in the remit of the OP's query. (I think "Éire" isn't recognized by the UN as such).

Slightly puzzled by this comment.  Of course it shows as Ireland as that is the name of the island on which the Republic lies.  The English language name, that is, as spoken by the majority of Irish citizens.  It is called Éire in Gaelige (Gaelic) and if the Irish government wanted to use that name instead, they could.  The UN has no say in that decision,.unless there is some sort of dispute, as there was over Northern Macedonia where Greece objected to the name.

So the pre WW2 Irish International GP is a definite candidate for this thread

   You mean it is always in inverted commas?

Surely many of us are old enough to recall the Bermuda Grand Prix, or was it something I imagined…?

I may still have the Motoring News edition with the race report!!

The Puerto Rico GP (1962) goes down in the same category as well.

Tbh, I always tought that the Bermuda GP was just the result of a frenzy or confusion with another race in the Caribbean region during the 60s - always heard of it, but never saw a report of this race, neither the circuit it was contested.

I would love to see that!

I will see if I can find it.

The German GP was held under three, possibly four, different entities, all with different borders. The German Reich (1926-1939), Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), West Berlin (British, French and US occupation zones) and Federal Republic of Germany (post reunification borders).

Nevertheless it was always the "Großer Preis von Deutschland" and organized by the AvD, the German Automobile Club. The official legal status is, that the German Empire did not cease to exist in 1945, but was only "unable to act" (without any operative government institutions left).

Hence, >>the surrection of the Federal Republic of Germany [in 1949] was not a foundation of a new West German state, but rather a part of Germany became newly organized. The Federal Republic of Germany is NOT legal successor to the German Empire, but as a state IDENTICAL to the state "German Empire" - in hindsight to its territorial extension only "partly identical", so that its identity doesn´t demand exclusivity<< :stoned:

After the reunification of 1990 the territory of the FRG was expanded by the territory of the GDR, but its legal status (the continuity of the German Empire in the shape of the Federal Republic of Germany) endures unchanged.

So no, always the same entity, but different forms of organizations. But I have to admit it is complicated and it took us a long time of legal discussions, while we still have people today who refuse to the existence of today´s German state and declare themselves as kings, regents or governors of the German Empire...

Btw, also take a look at France, 3rd French Republic, 4th French Republic, 5th French Republic, but I assume it was always the same "entity" as well?
