@ChrisMedlandF1

Zak Brown says he will ask questions about this as he feels teams should operate independently on a sporting level, and that this was as an A and a B team.

Adds it’s an example of why he was worried about the joint ownership situation #F1 #SingaporeGP

He can ask questions. He’s probably not going to like the answers. Sore winner.

It was pretty blatant, but to be expected when there is potentially so much depending on the points for both teams and drivers.

Why is he worried? Does he think it might affect the WDC?

It was a nice sendoff for Daniel Ricciardo, his final act in F1. If Magnussen lap had stuck, how would he feel about that?

Better fix the rule that it always gives a point to the fastest lap among the top 10 finishers.

There are many more examples of engine clients being rushed aside for the main team though, did he say something about that as well?

He’s wasting his breath, Brown’s Red Bull and affiliate obsession is getting rather old now.

That's still open to abuse, though, but just by a smaller group of drivers. The rule should be deleted entirely. If not, then there needs to be something to prevent the practice of pitting for new tyres just to try for it. Under those circumstances, it means nothing. If it has to be part of a twenty lap stint, then it might reflect some aspect of race pace.

That's what happens when you give those kind of points.

Autosport, Andrea Stella:

I don't know the facts. I just saw that RB went for the fastest lap, and they achieved it. But for me, here, talk about sportsmanship and so on, I think... it would be out of place. So I think we have to take it at face value.

“They scored the fastest lap, and potentially as part of a longer-term conversation, we need to put the sport in a position in which, at any stage - being it trackside or being it factory-side - teams behave in a totally autonomous manner, because this is a constructors' championship.

“This needs to be definitely addressed. But at no point I have elements now to say RB went for the fastest lap to support the Red Bull. I just find it a little... how to say... peculiar. I did not see it coming.

“I was a little surprised that the highest priority of RB racing in Singapore was to go and score the fastest lap of the race. I think we just have to work harder to make sure that this [championship] doesn't come down to a point.

“At the same time, I have so much sympathy, support and friendship with Daniel that I'm just happy that he may add this fastest lap to his track record.”

Some of us did in the race thread. :)

"Hey, Daniel, do you think you can do a 34.8?"

Wonder if VCARB will pit Ric to steal the point away from Norris

I thought it was a fairwell present to Danny Ric.

Speaking of presents, Ricciardo said in two interviews that he hopes the fastest lap point helps get Max the championship and that it nets him a nice Christmas present accordingly, so even if he’s half joking, the implication of the extra point plainly had occurred to Ricciardo.

Horner: Hey Danny, how about as a special send off, you play Max’s lap dog on your final lap?
DR: woof.

Teams pitting to go for the fastest lap is exactly what they wanted. They should allow all drivers to be able to collect the point, and then watch the battle as all the back markers come in for new tyres and try for the only point they might get in a season.

I don't understand this line of thinking. Why is a free fastest lap a gift?

A statistical gift? OK :drunk:

He's right. This is the kind of stupid **** we get when teams don't operate independently and then F1 create stupid rules like a point for fastest lap.

It's a stupid point anyway. The foolish thinking of those in charge was that if they offered a point for the fastest lap then teams would stop easing off when their finish position was established and run harder to try for the extra point. Of course, nobody has adopted that strategy and it's now a case of just bolting on a set of fresh tyres if you have the opportunity.

The experiment has failed. Just get rid of this gimmicky extra point.

Technically VCARB didn't do anything illegal, and it would be really hard to prove that it was inter-team orders; so I'm not too bothered by it.

That being said, in reality, we all know it was intentional hahaha.

I don't get it.

Brown and Stella fighting over the Clown of the year award?

I know this is probably a hard concept to grasp for Zak, but how about making sure that one of your drivers is not taking away points from the only realistic title challenger in your team?

Watching this happen every race would be a farce, sorry.

That solution would just make everyone running outside of points pit before the last lap, in every race.

I know, and it would be a lot more exciting than watching the one person in the top ten who can make a free stop and take it.

A simple way to change it would be to learn only give the point to the fastest lap of the top 10 drivers, even if the overall fastest lap winner isn't in it. But that would be unnecessary I think.

I'm as much of the thought it was Danny wanting to go out with a bang as it was any nefarious strategy by Red Bull, but so what if it was the latter? It would be so hard to police given all the engine partnerships in the sport.

I just see it as part of F1.

I didn't notice Magnussen pitting for fresh softs with 2 laps to go.

Every single person can see it was done to benefit the main Red Bull team. At best its a bit fishy, but it is what it is.

People will have to take of team coloured glasses to see it all.

But he is right. There is a constructors championship and it’s not fair if 1 team is having to fight 2 teams working as 1.

that quote by Mekies is pathetic - it’s a hollow fastest lap. No one buys the idea he was the fastest driver.

if RB wanted to take a point off McLaren then they should have sent Perez in.

.Because RB High Command decides that. Franz Tost had similar answers in the past iirc.

There should of course be no fastest lap point.  It one of the stupidest things among many stupid decisions.

Alonso and AM did similar in Austria, where he finished 18th, which actually nicked the point off Max.

Pretty ironic that his final act in the sport was doing the thing he ultimately destroyed his career to avoid: being Verstappen’s lapdog.

If Zak is worried about Lando having lost a point in a manner like this, then i wonder what he thinks about his own decisons in recent races that have cost Lando many more points than one that went to his team mate instead!
