FORMULA E SILLY SEASON THREAD
FORMULA E SEASON 10 THREAD

ENTERING A NEW ERA OF FORMULA E

We're about to take an exciting path together: a step into the unknown, with new evolved cars coming, new powertrains, exciting rookies and faster, more on the limit racing.

With Season 11 of Formula E, we're about to enter the second phase of this championship's life.
The first 10 years of the series were all about growth: attracting manufacturers, estabilishing a solid viewership, showing people that EV's can actually make for exciting racing and reaching the World Championship status.

Now, the championship is about to enter its maturity phase.

A phase were we're about to start to see the pure performance coming in as a big factor: with F1-beating acceleration figures and new technologies unlocked, the drivers will be able to push these evolved cars to the limit and change the perception of Formula E in many people's eyes.

This is the first step towards the beginning of the Performance Era of Formula E, that's going to peak with Gen 4 in two years time.

Introducing GEN 3 EVOLVED, this is Formula E SEASON 11

FEStory.png

Formula E story timeline so far

GEN 3 EVO IS A MASSIVE STEP FORWARD

Hold tight, cause, this is going to be a fast ride!

Season 11 will bring on track arguably the biggest mid-gen step forward that Formula E have seen so far.
It's called GEN 3 EVO and is set to change the dynamics of the entire sport!

"GEN 3 EVO is such a step forward compared to base GEN 3 that we even considered the possibility to consider it as a Gen 4 already"   -  Jeff Dodds, Formula E CEO

13c4.png

GEN 3 on the left, GEN 3 EVO on the right

The GEN 3 EVO car is an evolution of the GEN 3 concept, introduced in 2022.

The car is visually lighter, with a slimmer front front section that eliminates the "triangular/dorito" shape effect that many hated in the base Gen 3 car.
The center of gravity of the car have been lowered, and a new, more robust front wing have been introduced: this should prevent the debris-fest we've seen in many of the Gen 3 races.

Not only a cosmetic overhaul tho!

Both the new front wing and the new aero fairing placed before the rear tyres will partially cover the wheels from the air impact, making the cars less draggy.
This will reduce the benefit of staying tucked behind another car to save energy, and should make for less extreme "
peleton" races.

These changes are also believed to add some downforce points.

GMCp-M49as-AAXeuc-1.jpg

But the list of GEN 3 EVO's new features goes way beyond the visual changes.

A new Hankook tyre have been introduced!
Drivers and teams complained till the very first days for the lack of grip and the excessive hardness of the Hankook compound selected for the first two seasons of Gen 3.
This new compound is softer, offering around 5-7% more grip, making the cars more satisfying to push for the drivers, and obviously better for the laptimes!

But the biggest change of them all is the Unlock of the Front Powertrain, previously used only for re-gen, making these cars 4 wheel drive cars

The unlocking of the front powertrain + the softer tyre compound leads to a staggering 0/100 km/h acceleration value of 1.86 sec, making it the fastest accelerating FIA single seater.
This is also possible due to the introduction of a traction control system that will be activated when in 4WD to maximize the acceleration potential.

The 4 wheel drive will be available to use in Qualifying, Race Starts and Attack Mode phases.

This will make a massive difference expecially for the Attack Mode dynamics.
It's no secret that the Attack Mode became basically irrelevant since the introduction of Gen 3, as the drivers weren't be able to put down the extra power due to lack of grip from the Hankook tyres.

The GEN 3 EVO car will adress that problem: the 4WD will make sure that there will be a big performance delta between the drivers on Attack Mode and those who are not, making it an important strategic element of the races once again!

There's also the possibility of Fast Recharging being finally introduced this season in selected races: the teams have undergone several tests this summer and will do more tests in Valencia.

PRIVATE TESTING SHOWS BIG OVERALL IMPROVEMENT

Teams have not been static in this summer, on the contrary!
They've been testing the new cars and powertrains quite extensively: it's believed that ABT Lola and Mahindra have clocked in already thousands miles of testing, trying to arrive in Valencia Pre-Season test as much prepared as possible.

Early impressions reveals that the cars are quite faster, thanks to the softer tyres and 4 wheel drive system, with an expected pace improvement of at least 2 seconds / Lap.

Here is is some interesting quotes from the drivers!

Sam Bird (McLaren)

"Oh my god. It just goes off the line!
And out of the corners when you use 350 kW + 4WD, it just disappears!
It's by far the fastest thing i've ever sat in terms of 0-60 km/h acceleration. It will leave everything else to dust.
Shows that FE is trying to improve every time"

Lucas Di Grassi (ABT LOLA)

"The 4WD changes the car completely
It will also change the dynamics of the strategy in the races, with attack mode becoming relevant again.
The car handling differently will also change the lines and how you approach some corners"

Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche)

"There are three main differencies: the 4 wheel drive, the new aero kit and the tyres.

I was surprised at how the new aero kit makes the car behave quite differently compared to Gen 3.

Jean Eric Vergne (DS)

"The car is much nicer to drive and push. This is what Gen 3 should have been from the get go".

FORMULA E SEASON 11 TEAMS AND DRIVERS

It's been an hectic Silly Season 24/25 so far, and it just keeps delivering!

Lots of moves all around the field.

The biggest newelty of the season is for sure the arrival of LOLA-Yamaha as a manufacturer & technical partner to the ABT Team.
Some of the most prestigious names in Motorsport joining the FE grid is always good news, and could push ABT towards its glorious days back in the first few season of Formula E.

ERT turns into Kiro Race Co and will be powered by Porsche S10 powertrains

But the drivers market itself went bananas this summer!
Here it is the changes!

  • Max Gunther joins DS Penske
  • Jake Hughes & Stoffel Vandoorne joins Maserati
  • Nico Muller joins Andretti
  • Taylor Barnard joins McLaren
  • Norman Nato joins Nissan
  • TBA drivers still evaluated for ERT and LOLA

Yay Maloney!

Great to see more rookies and young drivers coming in, a good sign for the series!
Maloney have been one of the most exciting drivers to watch in F2 this year!

This season we'll have Taylor Barnard & Zane Maloney coming in, and there are still the two ERT seats to be assigned!

Is this the start of a youth swing in FE?

Also from the notebook

FEN understands that Formula E has been talking to UK terrestrial broadcaster, Channel 5, about a potential re-emergence of races on terrestrial UK TV next season. The independent channel covered the series in seasons three and four (2016-2018) before it was then covered erratically by the BBC and Channel 4.

Interesting that Cupra may stick around with another team. Andretti would make sense with the VAG link.

Good news about a potential Channel5 deal in the UK - i really think they need at least a C4-F1 style highlights deal in order to grow the championships fanbase in the UK.

Now that's surprising, wasn't expecting that!
Let's see if they finalize the deal, and yet another team name change incoming for them!

Also it seems that Ticktum-Camara are set to stay with the team.

Racing with a Porsche powertrain could also boost their morale, even if it would be an older spec.

Fenestraz chances of staying in FE looks slimmer & slimmer

I don't know what happened with Fenestraz after his promising early form. It's very strange. If he doesn't stay on the FE grid, I think he'd be spectacular in IndyCar (although getting a paying seat there is getting more and more difficult by the day...).

ERT are the Jordan of FE!

I'm not sure what i think about the deal tbh.. it's an older powertrain so might start off ok but fall behind by the end of Gen3 Evo. And work will still need to be done to integrate it with the 4wd system.

Brilliant, brilliant podcast.

Sam Bird is also just passionate about the sport, and conveys it in every word.

The percentage improvement in tyre grip is rather small, so I'm not shocked Vergne isn't impressed by that. The rest is all very positive, though.

Isn’t one of the biggest issues though that the tyres unduly hold back the cars

The tyres did render Attack Mode kind of useless, but the 4wd combined with the slightly better tyres should make it effective again.

Regarding Fast Charging, i would only like to see it implemented in selected races during the season, longer races than usual when you can showcase the capabilities of the recharging technology.

Doing a pit for fast charge in 40-45 min races as it is, may not be great.

I think a functioning attack mode will be enough to spice up the races.

I'd only be pro charge stops if it's actually going to add something - so either longer races or less energy-limited racing on the high usage tracks.

Hopefully, it’s not a great look when the drivers are pointing out that the racing isn’t much fun as the tyres can’t handle it.

That's my worry.. are they buying the rights to use & develop it themselves or are they just a customer receiving no development on an old powertrain? Not sure this is better than trying to develop their own long term.

I havent seen anthing to say otherwise, but the front motor is still the same spec part from Gen3 that is used by all the teams. Is this correct?

So the teams powertrain, refers only to the motor to the rear axle?

So by using last years powertrains from Porcshe, KRC arent really going to be at a big disadvantage. I suppose it depends on what level of collaboration there will be on software.

Should be correct.

Even though Wehrlein spoke about the teams working on a sort of "traction control", to handle better the 4WD power erogation, and i believe that invovles the rear axle as well in a sort of balancing game with the spec front motor.

"The traction control for the all-wheel drive is being developed and is of course constantly being improved," Wehrlein explains.

"As traction control is not yet permitted, we have to invest a lot of work in it. We also need to find out how it works with the front engine, as it is not developed by us but comes as spec car from a manufacturer. So we have to see how we can optimise the balance."

I'm not sure what's the exact differencies between S10 and S11 powertrains, but i believe that lot of work has gone into the electronics, making the 4WD power erogation as efficient, smooth and manageable as possible.

So that could be weak point in the adapted S10 powertrain of the Kiro Race Co team.

I think that Kiro's going to be fine initially, since they'll likely be getting the same version 1.0 software that the works and Andretti teams will have.  But by the end of the year, they might still be stuck on version 1.0 when Porsche have 2.8 and Andretti are on 2.2 or so...

I think that Kiro's going to be fine initially, since they'll likely be getting the same version 1.0 software that the works and Andretti teams will have. But by the end of the year, they might still be stuck on version 1.0 when Porsche have 2.8 and Andretti are on 2.2 or so...

It's not just the software though, there's a fresh homologation of the drivetrain for Gen3 Evo and Kiro will be on the old one. It will be interesting to hear more details though, specifically are they actually going to be a Porsche customer or are they buying the IP off Porsche to develop themselves going forward.

"Golden Lap" additional point rule could be introduced this season

https://www.the-race...-format-points/

Basically, two laps of the race would be chosen randomly prior the event, and who leads the race in those laps gets one additional point.

Not big deal, but could be another variable.

Still unclear if it's going to be approved or not tho, drivers are not fans of it.

If I were a Ludo enthusiast I would welcome this. As a motor racing enthusiast it makes me vomit.

It sounds interesting, and like it would work well for the Peloton races. I like random gimmicks in Formula e that are equal for everyone (so not fanboost!)

Having watched from the first FE race and been so excited to watch the development of the series, it’s desperately sad to see them looking to ever more ridiculous gimmicks to try and stay relevant.

Give them tyres that can be raced on properly, have several races a weekend where they can race rather than energy conserve and accept where and what you are.

You can’t use crap tyres with the excuse that it’s ‘road relevant’ whilst also enforcing massive energy conservation due to battery limitation highlighting the main issue of electric cars, you’re literally taking the worst of both worlds….

Unreal decision making lol

They should invest in their Marketing as well as all those tech things you all mentioned to improve the Racing.

Who the hell comes up with these arcade Mario Kart esque stuff… just beyond.

I just finished the Autosport podcast on the top ten drivers of Formula e, and it was noticeable how all ten are still in the series. I enjoyed listening to the talk about the top three; Vergne, Di Grassi and Buemi, as I find them particularly fascinating drivers with how different they are. I wondered if the most talented drivers of the current group sort of mirror those three. Mitch Evans is like Buemi, the fastest driver on the grid but a bit error prone, I think, and with a tendency not to maximise results. Nick Cassidy is very much like Di Grassi, lacking a bit of outright pace compared to the others but with absolutely supreme race intelligence to make up for it. And Jake Dennis has a tendency to blow hot and cold like Vergne does but might well be the best of the three in my opinion, going into the next generation.

That's a pretty fascinating take, and the more i think about it the more it makes sense!

There are definetely parallels between those drivers.

I'm also excited to see what the newcomers like Barnard and Maloney will bring to the series in terms of driving style.

Supposedly as an alternative if the introduction of fast-charging has to be postponed/cancelled, so either fast-charging or golden laps.

That sounds truly unnecessary.
