Who will drive for the team?
McLaren: Gabriel Bortoleto (?)
Red Bull: Isack Haadjar (?)
Ferrari: Arthur Leclerc (?)
Mercedes: Andrea Kimi Antonelli (?)
Aston Martin: Felipe Drugovich (?)
Racing Bulls: Dennis Hauger (?)
Haas: ???
Williams: ???
Alpine: Jack Doohan (?)
Sauber: Théo Purchaire (?)
=> Sad that there will only be one driver per team.
=> Not sure if only drivers with 0 races are allowed (or perhaps 2 races, which means, Bearman for example could also drive in that race).

Hauger not a RedBull driver anymore.
Depends of what rules about licence will in place: test rules(14 SLP), Friday SL (25)or full SL(40).
Ferrari have Shwartzman, for Haas would be usefull give more time in team for Bearman, Iwasa for RB F1, O'Sullivan or Chadwick(she can test and do FP1 i belive) for Williams or Vesti, if there needed to have full SL.
But, who care about sprint with 10 cars?

I've long advocated for sprint races to be used to showcase third/reserve/young drivers (e.g. 2 times per season in 6 sprints), but this sounds rubbish.

Hope they expand it to 20 cars

I like the idea, but the execution with only 1 car per team is sad.

Even with 20 cars - it is bad. We have feeder series for youth drivers. Can't imagine someone would judge young driver on 1/3 of the race.

Er... is this supposed to be happening at the final round? Considering this isn't a sprint round, and the WDC could be on the line that weekend, this seems like it could be a massive distraction to Red Bull and Mclaren if it ends up being so...
Idea was to do that at post season test session. And i'm not sure, that there are agreement to do that in 2024 already.

It's a weird idea anyway but 10 cars on the grid will look a bit pathetic.
#12
Posted 26 September 2024 - 11:53
So looking at this it hasn't been agreed yet, but the vote is too be taken on the 2nd Oct. The proposed race to happen on the tuesday after the last GP, so the race weekend is not affected.

I presume it will be on the Monday, in lieu of the young drivers' test.
Edit: Ah Tuesday, as per post above.

Kind of a shame it's only one car per team, Mclaren could have put Pato in one car alongside Bortelto in the other.
Pourchaire should also finally get to drive an F1 car for Sauber, and Drugovich for Aston Martin.

Is there an age limit, would someone be able to shove Palou in one of the cars if he was interested?

Is Gary Paffett still available?

Are there 20 young drivers worthy of such an opportunity?

For this "opportunity" to had 1 stint race simulation long run at test i think even Jamie Chadwick or Artur Leclerc are worth.
You can add some like Dennis or Evans,Cassidy, Marciello too.
Forgot Isack Haadjar.

I predict some sort of carbon fibre shards somewhere on the track. The pressure in this sprint will be high, it can sway decisions of team principals and affect the path of their career
Like these drivers crash and burn every weekend already and now that they are sat in an F1 car, they will do the same..

I'd like to see Jamie Chadwick get a chance in the Williams and I think a sprint would play to the car's strengths as it seems fast but fades later in races.

I was just in the shower and thought, what if 10 went to F2 drivers and 10 went to Indy drivers. Of course, the Indy guys would need a weekend of orientation. Would be an interesting thing to do in Abu Dhabi in January. I'm sure teams have enough spare parts if they didn't care about optimal performance.

I have had my fingers crossed for Chadwick every NXT race this year, and I hope she gets a shot in Indycar next year, but if I'm honest, I don't see that she's in the same league as every other driver on that list above.
By her own admission, she struggled with the physicality of an NXT car, and although she has largely improved in that area, an F1 car is going to be a struggle.

I would want to see this. And must be drivers who haven't raced in F1 before.
McLaren: Pato Oward
Red Bull: Arvid Lindblad
Ferrari: Schwarzman
Mercedes: Andrea Kimi Antonelli
Aston Martin: Felipe Drugovich
Racing Bulls: Iwasa
Haas: Palou?
Williams: Zak O'sullivan
Alpine: Victor Martins
Sauber: Théo Pourchaire

On 2nd Octobre, all teams will accept a rookie sprint race in Abu Dhabi.

I imagine that Bearman and Shwartzman will fill the Ferrari and Haas seats, Iwasa for VCARB, then Browning for Williams.

20 F1 drivers bricking it that it could be their own car on the line here. It's one thing doing laps in P1, totally another to put the car at risk in a racing scenario against other rookie's

Will they be building all new chassis for 2025,or could they continue to use the 2024 ones?

I think he might be a better bet than Siegel, who I've just noticed also has an avian name, kinda.

I’ve not heard anything about the teams not having new cars for next year. Have I missed something?

No, I'm just assuming that what they end this year with is more or less what they will race next year, with the bulk of effort going into 2026. If there are no major changes to the chassis design, can they continue using what they have, saving on the budget for next year.
It's just idle thoughts as I think quite a few teams will be writing off 25 to concentrate on 26.

I’d be surprised if they didn’t design new chassis. But even if they didn’t, they have months to build a new spare.

2 cars per team and a full race would gonna be better, no?
Yes, but baby steps first perhaps? If it works OK, then do that next year.

I already said this on another thread, but if they need to have stupid sprints for young drivers that no-one asked for, THIS one month gap between GPs would've been perfect opportunity to do it. At Jerez or Mugello or wherever different, with teams compensated for travel and accident damage by F1 themselves. This would've made sense both from the general engagement side of things but also for those drivers themselves considering contracts are still up in the air right now. But no, instead it's some boring Tuesday in December. But I guess it doesn't matter what the time is when they release the 5 minute youtube highlight clip of Crofty shouting Boy from Barbados while 10 cars cruise around soulless desertdrome in constructors championship order

Think you will find the teams are doing much more important work during the break. After the last race is by far the best time to do this. Everything is already in place, no extra travelling, and any damages has zero knock on effect. And if your not interested in it, you can just ignore it.

Of course they are doing much more important work during the break, which is why I said these extra expenses would have had come out of F1's pockets and not from cost-cap

Then why did you suggest it should be done during this break?

Sounds good to me. Rookies get a chance with F1 cars in a competitive session. Nobody has to worry about damage accidentally affecting the championships since it's post-season. We get something else to watch. Difficult to see any objection really.
