Thought it deserved its own thread. Good luck to Liam, fully deserved!

Liam's back! Feel like this would've made more sense a year ago but anyway, contracts.

Congratulation to Liam for the well earned promotion.

Hopefully he can convince Red Bull to also get the 2025 seat with strong performances.

Harsh on Ricciardo and not totally fair in the way it was managed by Red Bull, but the performance wasn't there anymore.

Liam’s having a rather interesting Formula One career so far, becoming a mid-season replacement for Daniel Ricciardo twice.

This time he’s got the rest of the season to settle in. And presumably will be retained for 2025?

Call me cray-cray but I think if he does well, there's a chance at the 2nd RedBull seat for him for 2025.

The RB statement also seems to close the door on Ricciardos career with them.

While I'm obviously gutted for Dan especially not getting a proper send off, no hard feelings towards Liam. Wish him all the best with his chance in F1.

About time.

All aboard the LL train!

Waited years for this, hopefully becomes a 2025 seat full time.

Well,  we all knew that didn't we.   I love Daniel but I said that Yuki would put an end to his career.   All the best to Liam and all the best to the HoneyBadger.

This seemed inevitable, even from around this time last year. Dan just never got back to his old self, and Lawson is an exciting prospect. Something else to look forward to over the remainder of the season.

RB and VCarb are an utter joke. Their management over this season has been truly awful and they deserve every bit of bad press.

Having said that good luck to Liam. It is about time he got a good run of races and I hope he is successful enough to get a drive next season.

I struggle to see the point in VCarb at the moment. Hopefully Liam proves that wrong.

As for Danny Ric. I just hope he finds some peace and happiness after a difficult few years.

A shame to see Ricciardo go but I think this is the right decision. Looking forward to seeing what Lawson can do, I was impressed with him last year.

Worried for Lawson. Last year he was racing Super Formula, this year he's just been on the sidelines with a few private or Pirelli tests here and there.

His return will be at CoTA, where he's never raced, with one practice session to get up to speed.

Last year showed he is F1 material, I hope it doesn't go awry chasing a long shot 2025 seat.

He's getting the rest of the season to prove himself. If he blows everyone away, he'll be on track to be with Max next year. If he doesn't, he'll probably still get at least another year to prove himself.

I worry for him to as RB have already seemingly shown they are not convinced. I hope he proves them wrong.

Surely a shootout to replace Perez for next year. I see no other reason to drop DR at this stage of the season…

What a mess this has been.

Why on earth didn't they come out and say Singapore was his last race, and then it could have been handled properly.

Anyway, good to see Lawson get a proper chance as presumably he'll be now in for  2025 too.

How’s his F3 - F2 record?

Why aren't you asking for his Super Formula results?

Liam contested the 2023 Super Formula Championship with reigning champions Team Mugen alongside two-time drivers' champion Tomoki Nojiri

Lawson was immediately on the pace during the first race in Fuji, qualifying his Honda-powered car third and becoming the first driver to win on their Japanese Top Formula debut since 1978.

Liam was beaten by Miyata to the title and Lawson ended runner-up in the standings with three wins, a pole and another podium, as well as claiming 106.5 points.

Why aren't you asking for his DTM results?

Lawson competed in the 2021 DTM, driving a Red Bull-sponsored Ferrari for the AF Corse team alongside F1 reserve driver Alex Albon.

On 19 June 2021, Lawson won the opening race of the 2021 DTM in Monza, becoming the youngest-ever race winner in the series. [He was a rookie]

Prior to the start of the last race, he was leading the drivers' championship by 19 points ahead of Kelvin van der Linde in second and 22 points ahead of Maximilian Götz in third, respectively.

Towards the end of the race, Mercedes gave team orders to Lucas Auer, who dominated the race, and Philip Ellis to allow Götz to claim the lead and secure his third win of the season,

which put him three points ahead of Lawson in the final standings for the drivers' championship.

After the race, Lawson was visibly disappointed with his second-place finish in the drivers' championship. He said he was "pushed off" by van der Linde and called the South African

"the dirtiest guy [he's] ever raced against." Van der Linde was given a five-second penalty for the manoeuvre, prior to receiving a puncture in another battle with Götz in the closing stages of the race.

He also stated that he no longer intended to remain in the series.

They will be both driving the same car in all events to the end of the season. No need for a shootout. They will have all of the data from the free practice, qualifying and race sessions.

Things don't always happen overnight. Negotiations are often involved. People have to be informed. Documents have to be signed and authorised.

Thing with Lawson is that I think he acquitted himself brilliantly last season, he was thrown in quite late and barely put a foot wrong on debut, then he managed a couple of points what, third time out, with a couple of finishes just outside the points too. He was really, really solid. Can’t think of any glaring mistakes. What I don’t think he quite showed was stunning raw pace, and he didn’t really show that in F2 either. He was very good at converting good starting positions in the sprint races into victories but those tended to come because he’d qualified at the back end of the top ten in the first place. And I think it might be a bit tougher for him this time round, having never raced at COTA and with the wider uncertainty around Red Bull and where they’re going to place their drivers for 2025. I hope he smashes it and makes himself indispensable for ‘25 bit I kinda feel like he needed longer than this if they were serious about assessing him.

‘Shootout’ in this case obviously meaning it’s between one of Lawson and Yuki by the end of the season.

Best of luck to Lawson, hopefully he can join the other talented youngsters on the grid, feel bad for Daniel as I’ve always been a fan but the stop watch is everything in F1 and he hasn’t been fast enough the last 3 seasons. Hope he sticks to racing I’d probably follow him into another series.

Thought about starting a thread for this, but another one might be one too many.

But I do wonder, 2 yes/no questions:

- Do you think Ricciardo's performances warranted to be sacked for the final races of 2024 by Red Bull?

- Do you think Ricciardo's performances warranted to be sacked before Perez by Red Bull?

Ricciardo was washed up, only his most ardent fans could see any future for him at a top team and he’d said himself he didn’t want to just be making the numbers up.

Therefore the team really had little choice but to shake things up.

Lets see what Lawson can do with the opportunity.

Good luck to him. I always felt that his achievements outside of F1 were undervalued. Let's see what he can do against a generally improved Tsunoda. The sample size will not be large but given Colapinto's initial splash, fairly or unfairly, that splash is going to be the minimum benchmark for Lawson.

I think Yuki doesn't have the personality for the job and it's far too soon for Liam, but...

Whenever someone says a driver doesn’t have the personality for a seat my brain autocorrects it to them not having the speed for the job. I firmly believe that if you’re fast enough, your personality doesn’t matter.

Huge Liam fan here. The answer here is No to both.

Personally I think Yuki should have had Perez's seat already.

But shootout implies driving as fast as possible. But I feel they will be looking at how each driver is handling their situations, which might not be solely about who is the fastest.
