Bit starved for motorsport? Bunker in and give this a lash a week before F1 gets going again. Race starts 11.30AM AEST, Sunday October 13, that's 1.30am in the UK (ouch) and 8.30pm on the Saturday on the east coast of North America which is still 90 minutes later than it outta be IMHO but whatever. I'll never understand what was wrong with the 10am start.

Unfortunately the only way to watch outside on AUS/NZ is via https://www.supercars.com/superview for $10AUD or about 18 US cents. 

 

Current stands show a tight CC race so the top 3 teams will need to be careful re. the top 4 in the CC.

The series has lost a lot of gloss for me since Holden was shut down by GM, it has lost it's tribalism as the Camaro is a non-event in Australia and Mustang dominates road going muscle car sales. It is what it is I guess.

 

As usual, I'll be bunkered in here in Toronto to watch it until i fall asleep with lots of snacks and beverages and waiting for my "I told you so" moment as the ever reliable Nick Perkat bins it.

I'm always super excited for Bathurst! And of course, as always, I'm picking the 888 for the win. Lowndesy showed he's still got it at Sandown and I was very impressed by young Cooper Murray.

Don't worry Alfisti - the Toyota Supras will save the series! If there is one car on the road that I see about as often as a Camaro it is a Supra

Still looking forward to the race Not really following the series very much - or at all tbh - but will always look to watch Bathurst. Just hoping for a good race 🤞

The quality of wheel-to-wheel racing has been much better this year... especially since the Ford Motorsport boss pulled all their drivers in and told them to stop running each other off the road. All of a sudden we're seeing passing, and repassing and quality clean stoushes

Thanks for that. yeah not the same without Ford vs Holden! My favourite days were back in the 80s and early 90s with all the different classes particularly the days of the VL commodores, Ford Sierra's, Nissan GTRs etc. Jim Richards, Peter Brock, Mark Skaife, John Bowe, Dick Johnson, Larry Perkins etc. Ah those were the days!

 

Will tune in but I actually prefer the Bathurst 12 Hr now. Loved the win last year of the Manthey motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R. The 911 is my dream car. One day...

In regards to the supra, at least it can act as a halo for the broad toyota brand, Chevy sell bugger all in aus.

Yeah more car manufacturers and more classes at the same time like the old days imo for the 1000. I record the 12 hour and watch alot of the second half live. Agree its too long to watch live esp the ungodly start time lol but I love watching Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Lamborghini. McLaren etc all battling it out on the mountain. Would be nice if Ferrari returned too.

Good point about the Supra. Perhaps GM keeping Chevrolet in Supercars despite the dearth of available models, is more about maintaining a brand presence for potential future growth? Probably relatively small change for them in the grand scheme of things.

Otherwise the arrival of Toyota may be a good jumping off point for them to exit the series... 🤔

Occasionally. tbh I was kind of hoping for a few this year, given the way the F1 calendar has been structured, but I guess no-one was up for it.

Here's the thing, 30 years or so ago it was fine but now the local guys are so well prepared and so well trained and so familiar with the cars that it is a huge ask for someone to get up to speed from another category. Bathurst is also part of the championship now so there is less tolerance for a weak driver. 

 

The cars make good power, more than a GT3 car but have laughable tyres and not a lof of downforce, they are very, very different to drive than anything in europe right now and controlling rear wheel spin is a key to stint speed. Also Bathurst bites, make a mistake and it's normally fibreglass and smoke everywhere..

Kevin Estre did not cover himself in glory for his guest spot last year.  I remember when some of the Indycar gang gave the Surfer's Paradise round a go during the late 2000s and they loved the old "NASCAR on the straights, GT3 in the corners" vibe.  It's sad the new car hasn't quite hit the mark, but I like that they fixed the ridiculous visuals that the old rules created for the Mustangs.  It's sad GM weren't willing to pull a reverse GTO and call the Camaro a Holden Monaro in Australia.  Never let it be sad GM couldn't find an opportunity they wouldn't fumble...

Geeee that is a lot to get used to, right hand drive, bugger all aero, heel and toe and the track itself. They also run a rear tyre the same size as my car and my car has less than 400 hp vs what, 650 odd?

Camaros haven't been officially sold here since 2020.

 

Even then, they had no right hand drive production so had to be converted by HSV, meaning that they cost 10s of thousands of dollars more than the equivalent Mustang.

 

The only vehicles that Chevy sells here are the Corvette C8 and Silverado.

So many crashes already and it isn't even the weekend yet...

 

I wouldn't be half so concerned if it wasn't for the size of some of these crashes - and the apparent hurting. Kai Allen in the Super2 had a big one too, and the commentators were openly talking about how he was hurting going into the race (!!!). And Davison did not look well walking away from that car.

 

I've got this really awful sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that we could yet see a Mostert-style crash tomorrow.

While I don't go there for the 1000 (TV is too good), I did a lot of Armstrongs/HFs/etc back in the day - you would enjoy the 1000!

Seems a super close grid, top 3 teams all very strong plus waters. I fear yet again waters will not have the codriver to get him there, why they keep moffat is beyond me.

Victor it's a great event, they've done a lot to sanitiser the place so you don't get killed up the top. Limiting folks to 24 beers a day has helped calm it down, it was freaking wild up there 30 years ago, and I mean wild. Good times.

Would it be part of a longer trip to Australia or go just for the race? Happy to offer local tourism advice if you're in the sydney region for a while.

I was there for the 12 Hour in 2016, yes, I remember a dinner with a ton of people that I got invited to via a contact on Ten-Tenths. If I do the 1000, the trip will probably include only a couple of Australian things I missed the previous time around (Uluru at least), I've got plans in a different country afterwards.

 

For now, on other people's advice, I've tentatively booked a hotel room in Lithgow for a timeframe around next year's 1000. (I know I'll have to rent a car) And the alarm is set for 2:45 am here to watch from the start this year.
