F1 is to drop the bonus point awarded for the fastest lap in the 2025 season after a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.

Good decision imho, the less gimmicks the better.

It wasn’t a gimmick, but yeah, didn’t work as planned. Good decision IMO.

PS. Possible award for most clickbait headline?

Definitely how RB used Ricciardo was too much for it, and the right decision is taken to scrap this.

If this is Ricciardo’s legacy, then I am all for it.

I'm glad it's gone. Those extra stops just to get the point were a bit of a farce.

As I've long maintained, the world falls into two camps...

1. those who agree with me;

2. those who will agree with me.

:p

Sound decision.  The late stops for a pity point for those in the race equivalent of  no-man's land didn't add a thing to the races.

Edd Straw will be happy.

It was rather silly.

Can I add a poll asking how people feel about this?

They should keep it, and award it to  the driver setting fastest lap regardless of where that driver finishes, then it is not a gimmick any more.

Everyone outside of the top 10 would pit at the end of every race. Do we really want such "entertainment"? And the backmarkers would never get it anyway in such a scenario.

Yes we most certainly want that.

Excellent news, it was always crap and meaningless. Next up they need to do the same for Sprints, but since Ricciardo is gone, who's gonna be sacrified to prove the stupidity of that format?

Topic needs a poll...

So someone played the "Sacrifice 1 Ricciardo to drop any one rule"-card?

Kneejerks all over of course, but I'm glad its out.

A point or two should be given to the pole position. F2 and F3 have been doing so way before they did points together with F1.

They already get pole position, isn't that enough ?

I voted yes when I meant no. Proof online voting shouldn't be introduced.

I think it is a good decision. It didn't add anything apart from some odd strategical options near the end of the race the needed people to be in the right place at the right time to be able to take advantage of it.

Don’t really care either way.

I guess a point for pole would be less gimmicky in that everyone is going flat out for the fastest time, there’s a bit less chance of a ‘fresh tyres’ point. Not that I would want to see that either.

Pointless gimmick. The only thing it achieved was a car in the top 10 with a clear window making a pointless pitstop to claim the point on fresh tyres. I don't think that is really enhancing the racing.

It almost made the fastest lap meaningless, because it was an incentive for anyone with a pit stop gap behind them to make an extra stop for fresh tyres and basically get it on the cheap.

I think without the point it’ll mean more, like it did before. Not a lot, but still more than now.

This rule was so stupid that I'm surprised it was suppressed. Usually, FIA sticks to its stupidity. Well done.

You think the drivers are going to try harder if there are points on offer? Pole position is the prize, nothing more is needed.

Time to introduce a point for the fastest lap of the weekend! Whether that's set in FP1, Q2 or the race.

It was a stupid gimmick because it did not give a point to any driver setting fastest lap, had all drivers been able to get points.

2024

RB would have 1 more point, Ricciardo would have 1 more point through him setting fastest lap on route to 18th place finish in Singapore

Aston Martin would have 1 more point, Alonso would have 1 more point through him finishing 12th in China.

Ricciardo would be placed a spot ahead of Albon, having scored 1 more point than him, rather than being tied.

2023

Alfa Romeo would have had 1 more point, Zhou would have had 1 more point through him setting fastest lap on way to 16th place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

McLaren would have had 1 more point, Piastri would have had 1 more point through him setting fastest lap on way to finish 12th at the Italian Grand Prix.

Zhou would have finished with 1 point more than Ricciardo and placed 17th instead of 18th in the WDC

2022

Alfa Romeo would have had 1 more point, Zhou would have had 1 more point through him finishing 16th in the Japanese Grand Prix

Mercedes would have had 1 more point, Russel would have had 1 more point through him finishing 14th in the Mexican Grand Prix

Alfa Romeo would no longer be tied in points with Aston Martin, but a point in front of them in the WCC.

The fastest lap could have a real reason for being, simply by allowing all drivers/teams to benefit from them.

This would be great. Even a couple of points more for top 3 maybe.

Don't need any extra points for quali, the grid place you get gives you an advantage for the race.

What a load of rot. No-one gave a toss when Alonso took it off Verstappen earlier in the year, but as soon as it happens to Norris they're carrying on like pork chops wailing and screaming and the rule is changed.

If Norris loses by a point, there will be a laundry list of reasons why, and Ricciardo getting it in Singapore will be right at the bottom alongside the Hungary team orders and the Monza overtake.

It’s clearly not because of Singapore alone.

Fine to drop it, I won't miss it. But if I was wanting to mix things up, I'd award a point (or three) for most fastest laps in a race. It might mean drivers at the front, especially those in the championship fight, driving hard to be the fastest each lap, which would mean more mistakes potentially and certainly a show of more skill.

a point for turning up

a point for the sharpest dressed

a point for demonstrating sportsmanship

a point for the smallest feet

...

oh, and a point for those who didn't qualify for any other of the extra points

Good move, points should be for the result of the race, not for picking up powerups and bonuses on the way to the finish line.

Not sure about that, For some reason, I love them in MotoGP, so I'm still willing to gibe them time to work in F1.
