What car is this and which event, racetrack or hillclimb?

Seeing the suitably bucolic setting of a shot of Lister RB25 on one of Doug Nye’s threads it reminded me of a couple of locations similar to that in photographs which I sourced from E Bay some time ago, all uncaptioned and undated. Most of the others in the batch are clearly Silverstone and Wiscombe around late sixties possibly 1970/71. It will be easy to try and date these , as and when I get round to it, but this one struck me as interesting for the car , which I am sure I ought to know…) and venue.

Is it the Tojeiro Aston Martin of Alistair Park? Again possibly Firle?

Certainly look like the outside-spoke Aston wheels too.

Looks more true Aston Martin DB3S at first sight...certainly 3S-style paint pattern with the highlighted front wheel-arch ... perhaps a faintly Scottish 'feel'to the hillside?  Rest-and-be-Thankful?  Might this be a Graham Gauld image?

Looks very like one of the last two works Aston DB3Ss - DB3S/10 and 11. My guess is DB3S/10 as it was widely campaigned in the 1960s by Bob Owen among others.

I don't think it is a DB3S.  In most photos in Anthony Pritchard's book, the DB3S looks longer and lower than this one.

Agreed. Wheelbase looks too short.

This Don Morley shot from the Revs Digital Library provides a good proportionate notion (counting x wheel rim diameters) of DB3S wheelbase.  I don't think the colour pic at top shows a wheelbase that "looks too short...". Also note fared-in headlights.

Richard Page has been kind enough to cast his eyes over a couple more of the shots in the ex EBay  mixed collection, which displayed similarly  chalky, grassy rustic settings, which also  applies to the RB25 query which Doug had elsewhere. Sadly they did not offer any wider views of the surroundings so we have drawn a blank. 
If anyone has a copy of the Palawan masterwork on the Aston DB3 models, I am sure there would be narrative for continuous history and owners of these cars, which might assist us in the original query. For me, whilst the  model-bespoke characteristic highlighted wing edges seemed a sure DB3  variant, the cowled lights made me wonder if  bodies had been changed etc once it became just another old race car.

Mention of Bob Owen makes me think we miss the wisdom of John Fielden, sharman, late if this parish, who was a big pal of Bob Owen for many years. Interestingly enough one of the other shots in the package shows the Maserati sports racer, red with two white stripes, which Bob raced in the 1970 s, but that was elsewhere.

It’s a pity the registration number can’t be seen. Park’s car was registered RTR 324 but wasn’t bodied as an exact copy of a DB3S until some years later when it was owned by a Mr Hobbs. I was familiar with the car when it was owned by Ian Stowe in the 1970s/80s and I don’t recall it looking quite like the car in the photo - it certainly didn’t have the outside laced works 3S wheels.
I still inclined to think it’s DB3S/10 reg. 210 MRA

The Chris Nixon/Palawan DB3S book has the history of DB3S/10.

 

It was a works car in 1956-57, painted green with blue nose and wheel arches.  John Dalton bought it in 1958; he registered it JFD40 and won several sub races in 1958/59.  Charles Sgonina bought it, registered it 210 MRA and raced it until 1963 when he sold it to Tom Rose.  Bob Owen bought it in late 1964; he lent it to David Eva in 1965.  Eva had a huge accident at Silverstone and the car was close to a write-off.  Bob Owen decided to rebuild but required a new chassis and DB4GT headlamp covers, wheels, hubs and brakes.  He painted it California sage green with red nose and eyebrows. Mike Ottway bought it in August 1966 and shipped it to Jamaica.  He returned to England in 1967 and brought the car with him, keeping it until 1980.

 

There is more but I'm guessing that the photo is before that.   The is no mention of the car being blue.

The Revs Library caption says that the car posted by Doug was registered JFD40 which was the number carried by DB3S/10 when it was owned by John Dalton.  The library contains several Don Morley pictures of the car.

Rose was #91 at Firle 1st Sept 63.

The background looks right for Firle.

Tom Rose did indeed have DP214 in 1965 and it was dark blue.

By coincidence I was looking recently at some old motor racing photos taken by my mother and one of them was this one. John Dalton's DB3S at Mallory Park on 18 May 1959.
