Hi all,

I'm on a bit of a mission to gather all the major results from the 1996 Australian motor racing season.

The Australian Motor Racing Year annuals finished with the 1995 season, and Natsoft results didn't cover complete years until 1997.

The biggest gaps are the Australian Sports Sedan Championship, GT Production Championship and Formula Ford Championship. These meetings all had two races per round and the only information available for each is total points for the meeting and not individual race results.

I have reasonable results from ATCC, Super Touring and Formula Holden Drivers Championship, but anything you have would be great.

Thanks in advance

Steve W

Sports Sedans used to be on their website but I just looked and not there. Contact them and they should have the resulst, as should the entity formerly known as CAMS.

I feel I got points every year in that period. Doing 1 or 2 events per year. Though I doubt I ever registered for the championship so maybe not.

This may be the case with other championships as well. A lot more entrants than registered.

Lee, you are such a comedian!

I'm going to spend some time at the SMSP Heritage collection on Wednsday, see if I can fill in some gaps.

Steve, is it worth seeing if the following year's CAMS Manual carries any championship results data within. 1996 is all a bit too new for those CAMS Manuals I have.

Failing that I guess it's down to trawling period Auto Action and/or Motorsport News, or possibly Motor Racing Australia. That are hopefully on hand at the AMHF collection during your visit.

For those not familiar with AMHF https://motorheritage.org.au/

Thanks  Stephen,

This was still the early days of Motorsport News, and like Auto Action gave coverage of each meeting but very rarely had full list of results, times, quali etc. The later years were much better but by that stage we had Natsoft.

I've asked Ray Bell and the "gang" if Motor Racing Australia was any better ... I'm not sure I can repeat their answers! Somethings about "boobs on a bull"?

As Lee suggested, contacting each individual Association would be my next task.

I'll see what the boys at the Heritage Foundation have but they have already said the mid '90's period is very hard to get results for.

Maybe when I've finished all this I'll publish a "last" Australian Motor Racing Year ... number "26". Any takers?

As they were 2-heat races, the pointscores that might be published in the CAMS manual would not show the individual race results...

And in my experience there were many occasions when the organisers made a mess of those multi-race results anyway. They could have complex little problems in them.

Steve, another possible option might be the late Scott MacKay's archive. Something tells me it ended up with Aaron Noonan.

Hi Steve, Auto Action used to do a full list of all the racing categories results at the end of the year from memory (or the first issue of the new year - can't recall). I know David Besnard won the FF championship that year with Jason Bargwanna in 2nd. Not 100% sure but I think John Briggs might have won the ASSC with Kerry Bailly in 2nd.
