So apparently the Verstappen - Piquet couple have just announced they're expecting. Congratulations to the couple!

From an F1 standpoint, I think this kind of puts a huge dent on a longer Max Verstappen F1 career and the dream of 7+ WDC's but hey, we can't be this selfish.

That kid will have some insane racing genes however.

(Apologies if this isn't the right place for the thread, if that's the case feel free to move/merge)

Delighted for him. Max has always been very very honest to a fault at times. I’ve always believed him when he talks of retiring young as there are other things in life important to him.

With F1 extending to 24 races, more sprints etc and a baby on the way, I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes a year out or just retires in 2 or 3 years.

Does anyone know how many drivers on the current F1 grid have kids? I feel that this was mentioned recently somewhere and its a small number (around two).

Well, it would cost him 3 tenths.

Congratulations to Kelly and Max. The successor of Raikonnen Jr is in the making 😉.

Current drivers with children is rather limited.
- Hulkenberg
- Magnussen

The rest is pretty much still a child 😅

Perez also has 4 kids doesn't he?

There have been quite a few drivers who were in F1 for a while having their first child, but it was more common back in the day (prime examples would be Schumacher and... Verstappen). In more recent years, Vettel, Grosjean, Kimi drove for a few years as fathers. Did it make them slower? At least they weren't any quicker than before!

I was wondering if there is any merit to the saying that a kid costs a driver a couple of tenths. It didn't work out with old Shuey. And arguably Piquet had his best driving at Williams when Jr. was already roaming around.

Congratulations! I'm always delighted when I hear about babies! I do think that this will mean that Max does not have a particularly long F1 career though.

Both of the kids grandfathers would have been teammates of Michael Schumacher.

Michael Schumacher's career certainly contradicts the idea that having kids means retirement or loss of speed. Also, isn't Kelly's daughter Penelope part of Max's life now anyway? I sense a little bit of wishful thinking coming in here.

Penelope has Kvyat genes… she may yet torpedo Max’s racing career

Because he kept the Speed for himself.  :p

How awesome would it be if they had a baby girl that goes into racing and actually makes it to F1 - those genes will be quite something. Imagine the first woman to win an F1 race be named Verstappen LMAO.

This is of course very plausible as well, but kids of big racing drivers are always interesting to think about for fans - for obvious reasons.

Curious to see if Verstappen will now do the same as his father did for him.

I think I speak for everyone when I say IF Verstappen's kid wants to race in F1, Max will treat his preparation QUITE DIFFERENTLY

Wish them best of luck to them with their preganancy. Hopefully the child gets the driving talent and not the unpleasant Piquet/Verstappen personalities.

Do we really need this negativity in a baby thread? You don’t even know them ‘personally’.

Congrats, and see you again in this thread in 14 or so years when we'll know if Mini Verstappen is potential F1 material.

Happy for him :) I think he should have waited a couple of years more if we are talking about whats's good for performance/combining parenthood with F1. I however understand why he didn't, seeing Kelly is 35 already. Guessing he won´t be in F1 for that many more years, especially if he ends up with non WDC-capable cars.

OK, their public personas then.

It’s not negativity. It’s positivity, hoping the child is a good egg.

I think saying 'I don't hope your kid won't be be like you/your family' is a beacon of positivity indeed...

Really? Could have just stopped after pregnancy, no? Hoping that the child does not get the personalities of its family is rather strange and imo not-done

Explains sentimental Max of two weeks ago saying he does not want to stay in F1 forever and eventually spend more time with his family.

Still hope het gets to 8 before he leaves though

Congrats!

well, Max has managed to not get 95 % of his father/grandfathers bad traits, so I reckon the kid will be fine.

How do you know? Bit tired of taking these type of sentiments and load them up in a baby/pregnancy topic.

Congrats to Max and Kelly. My hope is that the fame still permits them to raise a good kid. I believe Max has already accepted Kelly's daughter Penelope into the family.

yeah judging by some streaming videos he seems exceptionally patient with the little one and judging by several pictures posted by Kelly he seems hands on.

definitely strikes me as being a good dad (or in case of P bonus dad)

Kelly isn't Nelson and Max isn't Jos. Congrats to both of them, as others have said he already seems to have the day to day father figure role with Penelope and they do seem to have a lovely family unit (I know, I know, social media etc!) Hadn't realised how few parents there actually were on the grid to be honest!

I like that Max has always said that he won't impose racing on his kids. Always said he'll let them decide whatever they want to do. I have no doubts he'll be a fantastic dad.
