Am I wrong or is this premium brand EV power race going to end in tears?

https://www.autocar....ck-more-1000bhp

It seems that the only thing the premium brands can think of to differentiate themslves is more and more power. I sense they are so lost now they are chasing themslves up a blind alley in the long term.

1,000 bhp in mainstream EV is , in my humble opinion lunacy , both from safety and insurance prespective.

It sort of worries me that anybody in Uk with £20K can now buy a Tesla model 3 dual motor and get to 100 mph in about ten seconds just be pressing the right pedal.

I love hig power street cars etc but historically the cos,t and having only two seats,   limited sales and thus the risk on roads. Also there is an awareness in a low, noisy sports car of travelling fast, In a 2.5 tonne SUV seated high up in the air there may not be such an awareness..For example  I have seen the new Lotus EV SUV in the flesh and it is simply monstrous in every direction.

Sorry if I am geting old and cuatious

It's ridiculous. But the manufacturers are only catering to a demand, I guess.

Did you feel the same about V-12s and twin-turbo's back in the day?

I fully agree with mariner.  It is so comparatively easy in engineering terms to get stellar performance from any EV that the car makers simply don't seem to be able to control themsleves.  What was once a segment of the market where acceleration and top speed were not a consideration has now become a race - literally.  Instead of saying "look at our new SUV - ideal for the family including your dogs" has become "look at our new SUV that lapped the 'Ring in under 5 minutes.  Ideal for the school run""

Maybe if they concentrated more on how FAR the car could go instead of how FAST, you could have an EV that got you where you wanted to go without needing three of four coffee stops en route

Yes.

Weight and horsepower should be taxed. Severely, enough to have a serious influence on purchasing decisions.

Insurers should have - or get - a handle on this, sooner or later.

Totally agree. Trouble is big horsepower is easy with EVs for the carmakers, while range is more dificult and definitely more complicated.

The carmakers are also generating demand, to be fair. They could choose not to play.

When Tesla kicked it all off with the Ludicrous and Plaid models, there was a legitimate need to demonstrate that EVs were serious machines, not golf carts, but naturally it soon got out of hand.

The Chinese EV SUVs that are coming to market aren't going for lap records.
They will take over before anyone even notices it happening.

I don't know what it is, probably human nature, but every nationality or ethnicity eventually arrives at the conviction that they are the only people who can manufacture a thing.

This may be true for cheeses or champagne. Localized conditions, etc. Not true for cars.

A wise person once said to me, "Cars can be manufactured anywhere you can mail a floppy disk," which indicates how long ago it was.

Me too, 100 percent. I hate driving big SUVS. Something in my internal wiring makes me hypersensitive to the tall center of gravity when driving, so I am never comfortable. Also load distribution and grip. On an icy highway I am the jerk driving 5-10 mph slower than everyone else because I can feel the tires slipping and the car dancing around, so curse me now.

and power is not compromising range in a significant way (unless used).

It's simply there for the taking and then why not?

Responsiveness from the throttle, power and smoothness are the most important things that I love about my EV. They bring a very new dimension of fun to the game
