Whatever, happened to the Campagnolo conical brakes that Harley Davidson ran on their 250 and 350cc racers in between 74 to 77? They were touted as superior to discs, but as far as I could see were only ever used by Harley. I notice that some of the racers from 77 onwards ran dual discs - possibly the 350s. Was this due to the weight of them?

I've seen them described as a conical disc and also as a conical drum, but which description is more accurate?

Why were they considered better?

Were they actually better?

Why didn't anyone other than Harley use them?

There's a thread on adv rider with pics.I can't link or post pics sorry.

I'd describe the campags as conical drum, hydraulically operated.

Better than a disc of equivalent area ?  I'd  doubt it. Probably heavier too even in Magnesium.

I'd also doubt if more than a handful of prototypes were made. Which were probably given to Aermacchi/HD to try out.

Probably also limited in pad choice as they would be hand made.

I'd be curious about differential expansion between a ferrous conical liner and the Magnesium hub.

How long would the liner stay put ?
