One interesting angle not covered in the story is that all three suppliers in GM's 1952 four-barrel carburetor program had close ties to the automaker. Rochester was a GM division. Bendix-Stromberg was formerly controlled by GM, and Carter had an association going way back.

From what I gather this is one of the first 4bbl carbs, seemed to be initially all about GM.
I have seen Carters on 56 on Chevs. And I believe Pontiacs as well.
I feel 292 was probably the first 4bbl equipped Ford and the the T bird.
Though all of those engines seemed to get the Stromberg 97 in multiples for at least a decade after. I have seen 3 97s on SBC, Y block Ford, A series Mopar and big block Mopar. Even by 1970 racers were still using them. The Phil Herreen 318 LA Supermodified here in South Oz used six 97s on a homemade intake.
A friend who quit in 79 was still using 3x97s on his 318 A engine. The replica of the car was built around that intake and a early Halibrand quick change.
The joke ofcourse [in hindsight] they only flow 155cfm ea.

In hot rodding and grassroots racing in the USA, two-barrel carburetors remained popular all through the 1950s, used in multiples of two to eight per engine to obtain sufficient airflow.
This is because two-barrels were available in junkyards for nothing or next to it, while four-barrels were more expensive and harder to find.
General Motors took this same approach, sort of, with its Pontiac Tri-Power and Oldsmobile J2 setups et al. The unit cost of a Rochester 2G carburetor was like four bucks or something, compared to $400 for Rochester fuel injection. It was a cheap and easy way to offer a performance option.
On the GM 3x2 setup, only the center carb was operated by the throttle linkage. The two outboard carbs were attached to a great big vacuum servo to crank them open at a predetermined throttle opening.
