I saw a video on Youtube which analysed it with the rough TV telemetry, where it looked like on a previous lap he used a dab of brake to close the DRS successfully rather than the button...then on the incident lap he did the same thing, but might not have applied enough of a dab to actually trigger it to close.

Alpine are weaker than what I had convinced myself they would be, results so far underwhelming and Doohan have been doing what he can making a case for a swift switch, they need to be there and strike when circumstances present themselves, battling with the likes of Haas and Racing Bulls at least some of their luck could have happened to them as well.
Next 4 races will set the agenda for the rest of the season.

What was the pace like today? Seemed the drivers were pretty evenly matched. I am surprised how well the rookies are hanging with their expereinced team mates.

Hirakawa leaves for Haas. So Alpine took a practice session from Doohan for... what, exactly?

Because they have to. And now it is out of the way, they won't have to stand Colapinto down for a FP when he takes over. Makes prefect sense, if your name is Flavio.

Thought Doohan drive well to be honest - made the strategy work, was hanging on a bit towards the end, but got the job done. Makes the Friday crash all the more frustrating.
He comes across as a good lad, and I think he’s a better driver than people give him credit for.
I’d certainly like to see how he develops over a full season. It's a shame that it’s clearly not going to work out that way.

But they have junior drivers. Why not give them the benefit of F1 running? Hirakawa got it because it was his home race, obviously... but only to be gone the day after? Ridiculous.

Have you guys seen the video of Jack being unable to get out of the car after the race? He had to be helped by Ocon who just happened to walk by. Then he could barely walk, again helped by Ocon.
He was clearly not fit to race. Can't even imagine if there had been an accident.

Hmmn, that’s not good at all. Is this another driver suffering from seatbelts cutting in or something?

Meanwhile Colapinto has been running in Monza with the '23 car.

They only have Mini and Maini who are really suitable and there are still three FP1 sessions available.

Huh, I’m an idiot and forgot about that.
Incidentally, I have said before about other drivers that I think it’s a significant problem that there isn’t more independent verification that drivers are fit to race after injuries/illness.

Is the medical team at Grand Prix's not FIA appointed? As in they should have shut him down, or minimum send him to a hospital to be checked and cleared.

The medical team check you in the immediate aftermath but I don’t think there’s a formal requirement to check up on them the next day for any delayed problems. I suspect it’s left to the team and driver, but would be interested if there are any other safeguards.

They are missing the very excellent and professional Sid Watkins. If he said you weren't fit, that was it.

Whatever happened to the extraction test? Drivers are supposed to be able to extract themselves from the car within x amount of seconds. And it wasn't very many seconds at all.
#228

i don't think they do the extraction test for every driver before every race! Mind you, it might have made better TV viewing then the yawnathon that was Suzuka.

Yes, he kept Nelson Piquet out of the 1987 San Marino Grand Prix. They accepted it because they knew how much they benefited from Sid and his work.

According to Briatore they are losing 0.3s per lap due to the engine.

If that engine stuff is true, bodes well for next year if they can keep the same level of chassis/aero performance.

It feels like a lot of rookies are having blindingly good runs in the qualifying they are expected to make then cannot replicate in the next run. Doohan seemed REALLY on it but couldn't make it happen when it mattered.

Doohan is understood to have until around the middle of the season to use his incumbency to secure the seat for the rest of the year.
Senior trackside figures have been impressed by the speed he has shown at various points so far this season, and even surprised at times by how close he has been to Gasly, while also appreciating the way he has worked with the engineering team.
Pressure off? Doohan handed likely Alpine F1 reprieve - The Race

He definitely has some speed and that's the most important thing. The mistakes and lack of consistency is something you'd expect from a rookie, especially under the insane pressure he had to face even before the season started - I don't believe it wasn't a factor.

Agreed the speed is there in Australia and Bahrain he was close to Gasly over one lap over the weekend and I've not known a rookie coming in that has had a ridiculous amount of pressure before they even turned the wheel
