Hi everyone, a long time BSA B50 enthusiast here, especially with respect to those entered by Mead & Tomkinson in Endurance events in the period 1971-1974.

I’m struggling to find full results for the 1971 Thruxton 500 Mile race, particularly if/where the second entry by M&T finished. It was race number 42 and was ridden by Joseph (Joe) Thornton and Michael Taylor. Can anyone assist please. M&T’s other entry, number 41, ridden by Clive Brown and Nigel Rollason really cracked it by finishing 8th overall and 1st in the 500cc class.

Also, I’ve not ‘found’ Michael Taylor and am keen to know more about his racing pedigree before Mike Tomkinson got him on his bike at this event. Joe Thornton of course, has well known history on The Island etc. Michael Taylor was listed in programme as being 29 and a machinist from York. Help here please if you can.

I do so enjoy the threads on this forum, really fantastic contributions of knowledge from all around the world.

Paul (beesa71 everywhere).

You might have some luck contacting Trevor Swettenham at BARC, they have an extensive archive of results in their offices at Thruxton. I'm not sure if it goes back as far as 1971 but it'd be worth asking.

Might be worth a DM to David Wheadon ( Forum Member :Wheadon 1985 )  who's Events Manager / Competitions Administrator at the BARC and based at Thruxton I believe

Off topic a little, but connected. Over on Facebook there is an active page for Just Two Strokes, essentially for lovers of Ariel Leaders, which apparently did well at Thruxton. A quick post on that page may  bring up some Thruxton  results. Enthusiasts  have a habit of holding on to “stuff”.  best of luck

Roger Lund.

Thank you all for your helpful comments.

I’ve already emailed the Southampton and District MCC who were the organisers of the event. I didn’t realise that the BARC might have had some connection other than track ‘owners’. I’ll follow up your suggestions.

Thank you.
