There is an old thread in TNF where his grandson says he was born in Italy, probably Sicily, and died in the seventies:

On www.familysearch.org a Brazilian immigration card from February 1957 is shown which has a photograph of him and the following dates:
Born on 01 July 1911 in Palermo.
