This chart displays the number of race finishers outside the points each race, color coded to indicate how many points-paying positions there were under the current system. Apologies the chart lacks labels for the X-axis--Google Sheets did not like the ways I tried to add one.
Note that the big jump in 2010 is because F1 added Lotus/Caterham, HRT, and Virgin/Manor/Marussia, increasing the field to 24 cars. F1 returned to a 20 car grid in 2017.
