We're back!  Well, we will be in about 7 hours. And back - for one season only - where F1 seasons really SHOULD begin, in Albert Park, Melbourne.  Shout out to all our Australian and New Zealand forum members who for once get to experience a nice lie in and a leisurely afternoon's enjoyment while us Brits get up at o'dark thirty for a change.

What happened in Qualifying?

McLaren came good on the strong promise shown in Winter testing and by a slender margin, Lando Norris will start on pole:

Rest of the grid line up like this:

When is it on?

Different colour scheme, still hard to read the times!

What's the weather forecast?

Latest is for rain in the morning...we will see. Please update with any fresh forecasts!

@MeteoMotorsport

LATEST RADAR — Moderate-intensity rain is falling across Melbourne as the frontal system crawls east across Victoria. Rain of this intensity is expected to continue throughout the morning, before turning showery by mid-afternoon.

I se the alarm for 11:55 just in case they make some stupid start time wise, hope for a race where racing is the discussion points, and something controversial. A wettish race with either of Leclerc or Hamilton winning best case outcome, I take Verstappen over Norris and Piastri, and Norris over Piastri.

Hope a great race for Gasly as well.

*IF* they change the start time can someone post it in this thread and then report the post so the mods can see it? That way if anyone is still awake, one of us will edit the title of this thread to boost awareness.

They have scrubbed all their race tires (one lap on each during FP3).

Mclaren did that to one of their hard sets, it is common practice.

Some recollections from the past.

Wonder if sith is in town ???

Back in the day(late 90’s- 2000’s) 3AW would broadcast race week info and happenings 24/7. I sat in for a late night 30 minute session there with Crompo’s brother and we talked about the wild outfits some of the ladies wore along with where the Daily Planet had their annual “meet and greet”. After that we made a joke about the Pay and Display car park in the pit lane and got a bunch of irate calls to the station about it.

Nowadays they don't even mention the race unless it's a complaint.
Just the other night I heard an ear bashing that went on for 3 hours about the bird refuge that was behind the pit and paddock area.

Back then though....Oz was a wonderful place.

I don't think most folks here know what the daily planet was, want to enlighten the plebs Jon? And you're right, late 80s to mid 90s oz was peak society before people figured out they could play the stock market and all hell broke loose with cost of living.

There are many things that are unpredictable with the world right now.

First Grand-Prix of the season is one of the few that is normal. It's comforting  :D

Considering yesterday's carnage, I'm not sure I'd say it's cowardice. It's mare that they want the drivers to actually have time to properly warm the tires and have a race, IMHO.

A good race for Lawson is points today. A great result is top five. Weather might help but so would a car that can go the distance.

i am watching the F3 race. It was drying quite fast, but now the rain has restarted and will probably stay medium/heavy until noon local time (now it's 9:43am). It will probably affect more the F2 race than the F1 race.

Yeah and you can fast forward through SC start and red flag delays for track to be bone dry etc, win-win

It should be on TNT Sports as they have the contract and that's how I watched some of the Sydney round. But... I haven't been able to find the races on TNT for the Melbourne races. It might be on their digital service or whatever they have.

You might remember in the build up thread my wife was a little indignant that I was planning to get up at 4am to watch the race on our romantic weekend away... Well, turns out she's a very good actress and had actually booked a VIP watch party ticket for us at the F1 bar in London! :D

Oh I love her. But it's become an unexpected all nighter now... Time for another beer!

(I meant to quote that story in the other thread but accidentally pressed delete instead).

The drivers didn't seem too happy about that. I guess they'd normally be the main event so they'd have more flexibility on a delay. But with all the other races this weekend they have to fit into their strict time slot.

Oh well. Back to the Sebring 12 Hours instead. (On YouTube)

I live in Melbourne and it's drizzling. Weather app shows rain Throughout the day but will taper off from 3pm. Don't think it will be a Sc start, but they'll be on inters at the minimum. Can't wait..... Suspect this will play into Max's hands here.

Imagine paying many hundreds of dollars to attend today, and not only do you get rained on, the support events are cancelled.C why not just race and stop if they go past their allocated window like in F1??
