Indeed. Without seeing their reasoning, they were totally correct to give, for example, George 9/10 for maximising his package to it's full potential. So I'm not sure why Max is two scores lower for doing the same?

"On the basis of the race’s final third, it’d be a nine – but Verstappen was slow in the opening part as he struggled on the medium tyres. Lost two places at the start but looked livelier on the hards. Reeled Hamilton in, before the Ferrari driver pitted, and then passed Leclerc for fourth. Overly ambitious on tyres in sprint, costing a place"

For once Verstappen listened to the team, it is wrong again. :p

In Auto Hebdo ratings, Antonelli has a higher average than Russell, despite finishing behind Russell in every qualifying, race and sprint so far this season.

Antonelli is just 18 years old and skipped F3. Russell was in his 2nd year of F3 when he was 18 and he would stay 3 years at that level before going to F2. Antonelli has been so mighty impressive 3 races in a row that he should be nr. 1 in the average ratings considering how young and inexperienced he still is.

Antonelli today became the youngest F1 driver of all time to lead a race + the youngest ever fastest lap setter ever.

How? He qualified 15th and finished 12th in the car that his teammate won the race in.

I don't subscribe to the idea that young and inexperienced drivers should be receiving higher ratings for the same performance than a more experienced driver would get. It adds too much subjectivity because you can't quantify how much someone is held back by lack of experience. In my opinion, the ratings should be solely about how much performance a driver extracted out of the car, otherwise what's even the point of giving ratings if you have different criteria for every driver? I can understand some leeway (but in practice they're often given too much of it too) for stand-in drivers as they haven't had a chance to have the same amount of mileage in the car as the other drivers but not for regular drivers.

Antonelli has not extracted more performance than Russell in any single race weekend so far so in my book, he has no right to have a higher average rating than Russell (otherwise it puts an unfair and impossible expectation on Russell) and I think a driver who gets beaten on merit should never receive a higher rating than their team mate, ever. The lack of experience is one factor contributing to someone delivering worse results, along with lack of talent, poor form etc. I don't see a reason why one factor should be excluded from the equation but not the other. If you can't deliver because of lack of experience, it should show in the ratings too.

If you give inexperienced drivers higher ratings, then your ratings won't even show at which point an inexperienced driver started performing as well as their more experienced rivals because you were giving them inflated ratings from the beginning. Your ratings won't show who was doing the best job over a season either because you have different criteria for different drivers. In summary- to me, the ratings only provide any valuable information if they rate how well a driver drove in direct terms, period. If you introduce different expectations for different drivers, you may end up with absurd and unfair outcomes.

Those were the ratings from China, not Japan.

Mighty impressive? Really? He has run a lot of Mercedes Miles with older cars to train. He lucked into the Australia result on stragedy and in China he got 2 positions due to the Ferrari DSQ's. I don't expect him to beat Russell right away, but with how much he was heralded, I expected him closer to Russell.

He was faster than Russel in the race yesterday and his approach to his F1 debut season has indeed been mighty impressive. I guess he learned a lot from his crash in the FP outing last year.

Max's Rating

Aced everything over the weekend. His qualifying lap was truly something special and ultimately proved to be the deciding factor in the race. Shut down a Norris attempt at the start, and kept his foot in throughout the 53 laps to ensure the McLarens were kept at bay. If Norris or Piastri picked up the pace, he simply pulled out a little bit more.

These stats are completely meaningless. He is also the first rookie since Lewis Hamilton to debut in a podium worthy and potentially race winning car.

Autosport and AMuS are both underrating Verstappen here, I reckon, and overrating Hamilton. Each of them rates Lewis a point higher than Max, which is difficult to justify if you factor in performance relative to their respective team-mates.

There should be more than a 1 point difference between Leclerc and Hamilton for the Bahrain weekend as a whole (0.6s/lap difference in qualifying and 0.3s/lap in the race, albeit this was somewhat masked by the safety car erasing the 11s gap between the Ferraris, which Leclerc then opened back out to 8s by the end). Granted, Hamilton gained 4 places on his grid spot while Leclerc lost 2, but that simply underscores the gulf between their qualifying performances: it's much easier to move forward if you underperform in qualifying and start midfield (see Perez throughout his Red Bull tenure).

Giving the two Red Bull drivers the same grades (as AMuS does) makes no sense to me. Sure, given the difficulty of adapting to the RB21, Tsunoda did quite well to scrape into Q3 and score a couple of points, but by any measure he was a long way off Verstappen's level.

I suspect Edd Straw will have Max much higher up his rankings (maybe 5th or 6th), and Lewis somewhere in the middle. The top 4 should be Piastri, Russell (maybe even the other way round), Gasly and Leclerc. Let's see...

The championship leader not being anywhere near the top is interesting.

Autosport's Bahrain GP driver ratings
(race weekend performance)

Piastri - 9
Russell - 9
Leclerc - 8
Gasly - 8
Hamilton - 7
Ocon - 7
Bearman - 7
Antonelli - 7
Verstappen - 6
Albon - 6
Doohan - 6
Sainz - 6
Norris - 5
Tsunoda - 5
Hulkenberg - 5
Alonso - 5
Hadjar - 4
Stroll - 4
Bortoleto - 4
Lawson - 3

Not sure what else Piastri could have done to get a 10, got pole and led every lap other than when other cars were out of position due to pit stops. Bizarre.

Edit: and not sure why Ed Straw has ranked GR ahead of Piastri. Sure Piastri has a better car but he didn’t put a foot wrong, I can’t get my head around it.

I don't think there is a big issue with that from the-Race's ones, I think they gave Russell a lot more credit for managing around the issues, whilst Piastri just did everything he could, both did exceptional, but I guess they felt the McLaren should be winning so bonus to Russell for going above

Meanwhile Piastri getting 2nd and Norris 13th shows that they cleared rated Piastri's top drive even considering the car compared with Norris underdelivering for the weekend.

I never thought I would say this but I mostly agree with Edd Straw's assessments. Both Autosport and AMuS seem to mostly rate the best cars.
