Doing some random viewing and was wondering which GPs banned tobacco advertising in which years. If you look at some footage of 1999 Spa they have it banned on the cars but it’s back again in 2000. Should we create a definitive list of the GPs that had no sponsorship visible as I have seen doctored images which may confuse people.

Germany had a long standing ban, I think begun in 1973.

I thought it was band here too since the 70s, I remember the Lotus 79s not having JPS on them for the British Grand Prix, but the Mclarens still had Marlboro on them. Then in the early 80s it was the other way round, no Marlboro on the Mclarens but JPS was on the Lotus.

After the '99 race, Belgium was initially dropped from 2000 Calendar due to the tobacco ban. The Belgium government ended up backing down, granting F1 an exception from the ban for 2000-2004.

To further confuse things:  Although tobacco advertising was banned for the race, this didn't apply to practice.  So photos are not conclusive unless you are certain they were taken during the race.

I always found it a bit bizarre that the Marlboro/John Player British Grand Prix had such prominent billboards yet the respective cars had no tobacco sponsors.
Once they started to censor them, from memory it was not entirely consistent with brands like Gitanes, not being removed for a while and the Lotus’ running with only the rear wing sponsored in 1977 at Silverstone and not at all in 1978 at Brands but everyone else carrying their full livery? By 1981 the McLarens no longer carried Marlboro in the race which was sponsored by Marlboro…

I liked the sneaky alternative "sponsors", East and Buzzin' Hornets etc., and, not tobacco related, - 'The Small Family Car' sponsorship on the Surtees that got dear old aunty Beeb's knickers in a twist in the 1970s.
