Hello everyone, I’m going to build a model of an Alfa Romeo GTA and I want to depict Jochen Rindt’s winning car from the 1966 Sebring 4 Hours. There are quite a few photos available of this car online, but I still have some questions I would appreciate help with…

It looks like the car had a simple inverted-u rollover bar installed roughly in line with the b-pillars. Does this sound correct?
What would have been the state of the interior of the car? Does anyone have any pictures?
There is a hump on the left hand side of the boot lid – perhaps an additional rear light? Does anyone know, or have pictures?
The only photos I can find show the right hand side of the car. Do any photos of the left hand side exist?

Many thanks…

The roll over bar would just have been a single hoop supported by two low diagonal bars down to the rear wheel tubs, so not easily visible from the outside.

In period, cars with seat belt anchor points in the B-pillars this was used as lateral support, but on the GTA with its thin pillars this was not an option.

I presume that the car which allegedly is the surviving car proper at least has a cage similar to what the car had in period, as seen in this C&S article.  (Some claim that this car is in fact the sister car, #35 of Adamich/Zecolli)

Here's some undisputed photos from the Autodelta works in 1965: https://www.robertli...autodelta_7.jpg

The interior (w/Corsa spec seats)  would most likely been as in this photo from the homologation papers: https://www.robertli...ges/750_N_2.jpg

The hump on the left side of the boot lid is the external fuel filler cap for the high capacity fuel tank. (Note Jochen talking to Carlo Chiti to the left)

Also note the quick lift jacking points.

Thank you so much! You've found some fantastic resources and images I had missed. They've answered all my questions for now.

It'll probably be at least 6 months before I even get to start on my model, but I'll post some pictures here for you when it's done.

Do give us a clue. Scale, material, kit or scratch-built?

This is compulsory!

Tamiya, 1:24, from the kit but modified as required. I wish I had the skills to scratch build, but alas...

JonnyA - I assume you have found these at the Revs Digital Library?

Good luck with your modelling in any case...

Thank you Doug, there were some pictures in there that I'd missed, that should prove very helpful.

I'll be waiting with interest.  Rindt's F1 cars, ho hum (don't get me wrong, I am quite a fan having seen him at The Farm driving the 49T in the wet Tasman round).  Something like this is novel and interesting, great to see.

Looking through the Revs photos, a couple taken after the finish show two smaller fittings on the boot lid, possibly fuel tank vents or rear lights/reflectors. Please does anyone know what they are?

I suspect they may have been added to the car during the Sebring meeting as they aren't visible on some photos I've found.

Update: Actually it seems likely they were on #36 (Rindt's car) all along, but weren't fitted to #35, the car de Adamich drove.

Thanks Jesper. One of those pictures confirmed for me that Rindt's car still had the original fuel flap as well as the one on the boot.

Post 2 by Myhinipaa has the link to the Classic & Sportscar mag feature, in hardcopy form it was in their 11/20 issue.

That feature made Mike Dodman have a flashback to 1966 and in the letters pages of the 1/21 issue appears some of his colour photos of 3 GTA including the Rindt car at Snetterton. Alas printed rather small.  He does visit TNF as far as i recall,, so perhaps with a little arm twisting he might share them with the forum?

As I understand it, the car Rindt drove in Europe, as featured in the C&S article, is different to the one he drove at Sebring. I have seen references to different chassis numbers but I can't remember where.

Difficult to be certain, but a guess could be lights for illuminating the competition number, not sure why it would be on the car for this event though, no sign of any such lights on the doors which would have made sense if the car was intended to an event run in the dark. Were they present on the car before it was rolled (by a mechanic?) during shakedown before the event? Could the boot lid been from the spares or another car? It was quite damaged after the roll.

If the fittings is indeed lights they would most probably be the same as the number plate lamps on the car.

Thank you again Myhinpaa, I'm sure that's what they are. It's hard to tell, but to me they look as if they're oriented to shine out to the sides rather than behind the car.

They are visible in this photo: https://library.revs...-sebring/182927
