Formula E COMES BACK after such a long gap that i can barely remember last time out!  And i'm probably the biggest FE fan out there! Please fix your calendar!!!

But anyway: Formula E is back in action and it's back in American soil: this weekend the electric circus is going to race in one of Nascar and American Motorsport's most iconic tracks: it's time for the FORMULA E HOMESTEAD e-PRIX OF MIAMI!!

DO YOU KNOW HOMESTEAD ROAD COURSE?

Fun fact: this is going to be the LONGEST EVER track Formula E ever raced on!!!
And also, one of the fastest!

The track is 3.551 km in lenght, beating the old record of Beijing track. (3.4 km)

It's fast, it's challenging, with fast kinks like Turn 1 where you leave the Nascar Oval section to join the Road Course.

There are all kind of corners: slow ones, fast ones and even a Chicane added for Formula E needs of Re-Gening, Turn 10-11!

This looks quite the opposite of the traditional Formula E track right?!

SUPER COOL MIAMI STATS!

(courtesy of e.Formula.news

Formula E returns to Miami for the first time in 3,684 days - by far the longest break between two races in the same city (ahead of London, 1,847 days and Marrakesh, 854 days)

None of the current Formula E drivers have ever stood on the podium in Miami. Nico Prost, Scott Speed and Daniel Abt are all no longer driving in the electric series.

- The best-placed of the current Formula E drivers at the time was Antonio Felix da Costa, who finished in 6th place in the Amlin Aguri.

The most successful driver in the USA in terms of points is Lucas di Grassi: he scored 156 points in the 16 races in this country, more than anyone else.

- Antonio Felix da Costa, however, has the best track record in the States in the recent past: He has won three of the last four E-Prix in the USA and has finished on the podium in five of the last six races there.

Oliver Rowland, on the other hand, has had the longest lull: he last scored points in the States in 2021. Admittedly, he did not compete in 2023 (resignation from Mahindra) and 2024 (illness).

LAST TIME OUT IN MIAMI!   (long ago!)

March of 10 years ago (how time flies by!!), the first ever Miami e-Prix was held in Downtown Miami, around the American Airlines arena!

Pole position was set by a young Jean Eric Vergne in the Andretti, but the race was action packed from Lap 1 to the chequered flag!

A wild SCOTT SPEED was the driver of the race, but another french protagonist managed to take the win. Do you remember this classic race??

Spoiler alert: the race winner is french and related to a famous F1 World Champion with an iconic nose!

DO YOU REMEMBER THE PREVIOUS RACE?

Yep..
You're forgiven if you can't remember the previous race of Formula E, held in Jeddah in early February!     :o

its-been84years-titanic.gif

It was actually an action packed one, a double header in the shortened and FE-yed Jeddah Corniche circuit, with the introduction of the Pit Boost in one of the races.

And...it actually worked wonders!

The Pit Boosted race saw the drivers pretty much pushing from lap 1 to the chequered, with close to none energy saving, close to flat-out traditional racing!

The Pit Stops themselves went quite smooth, taking around 30 seconds to recharge up to 10% battery.

Some teams experienced some battery overheating, but thankfully none went Kaboom

yeah-csi-miami.gif

Max Gunther, the dark knight of the beautiful DS Penske car brought it to victory in the Pit-Boosted race, with a late charge gaining lots of positions and attacking race leader Oliver Rowland (Nissan), with a last corner overtake!

How dramatic!

Oliver Rowland got his share of glory in Race 2 tho, putting on track a Max Verstappen-esque performance to dominate the Race 2 and take a solo lead in the driver's standings!

Jeddah Race 1 Highlights (Pit Boost)

Jeddah Race 2 Highlights

HOW'S THE CHAMP BATTLE LOOKIN'?

After just 3 events, the driver's championship is looking as open as ever. Still early times!

BUT: Oliver Rowland is starting to put a bit of pressure over his rivals: with 2 wins, a podium and a DNF, the Nissan driver is looking like a huuuge title contender this season. And i'm loving it!

BUT2: Taylor Barnard is flying!! The McLaren rookie,  who's looking straight out of a primary school, had a stunning weekend in Jeddah with two podiums and a pole position, and launched himself back in the champ race!

BUT3: We can't rule out the Porsches: despite and awful weekend in Jeddah, DAC and champ WEH looked fast in every occasion, and for sure will challenge Rowland for the title.

No, those are not batteries on fire!

Here it is a look at the top 10 drivers!

SO, WHAT TO EXPECT IN MIAMI??

Well, i''d expect nothing but classic Formula E Madness!!

formula-e-crash-hero-image.gif

Visual representation of Formula E! going Indycar!

In fact, the race is set to be very demanding from an energy point of view, and the long and fast track could lead to a bit more of a group race compared to the previous ones.

This means: tight, close racing, tons of overtaking and some slipstreaming games, that could remind some of the Indycar!! tactics in the Ovals!

The Homestead track itself is something very different compared to everything Formula E raced in the past, so that could throw some more spins and twists in the narrative!

No PitBoost planned this race so it's going to go TRADITIONAL WAY!

HqpE35B.gif

Clear skies and high temperatures expected in Miami!!

FORMULA E MEETS NASCAR!!?

A mysterious event is going to take place sometime during race day in Homestead!

A Nascar-Formula E drivers SWAP event, featuring the Nascar EV cars.

What's that?? No clue!! And FE gives no explanations! So double interest!

Drivers are predicting a "long and slow" race.

Presumably this will be one no-one wants to lead and we'll see huge concertinas as people lift mid straight.
I'll probably watch, if only for the LOLZ.

I am keeping an open mind about the venue, though I cannot help but think that the short version of the F1 track which they used for Evo Sessions would have been a better fit.

I do not doubt the amount of focus drivers will have to put into energy management here compared to other venues, but I think there is still a question mark about how much we will perceive this as viewers. I do think there is a tendency that something which feels 'long and slow' for the drivers does not always appear so on screen.

The energy allocation per km this weekend is slightly more generous than Jeddah Race 2, which was also predicted to be 'long and slow' by the drivers. Rowland was very happy to be in the lead for quite a bit of that one, and even built a decent gap by the end. It does depend on the track itself, but I would wager something similar to that race is likely.

I think it is a shame that they are only bringing PitBoost to double header events this year, because a slightly more energy intensive track like this one is the perfect use case for the system. It can enables the cars to put on a good standard of races at larger and faster venues, and I think that is a fundamentally good direction to be taking the technology in the series.

FIA is predicting 157kph in qualifying. This compares to:

Portland - 167 kph
Misano - 161 kph
Homestead - 157 kph *predicted
Cape Town - 155 kph
São Paulo - 151 kph
Shanghai - 150 kph

Average across FE history has been more like 125 kph, and since Gen3 more like 138 kph.

I think it's probably closest in numbers to Misano Round 6 last season, in both qualifying pace and race energy targets. Jeddah's non-PitBoost race did have a similar energy target, but the overall lap speed was a fair bit slower so less aggressive lift and coast required to meet it.

So, looks like the energy saving will be heavy...  but not at the extremes we saw in Berlin or Portland a couple of years ago. Probably a touch less severe than the aforementioned Misano race given the slightly lower qualifying pace.

I’ve been out of the FE loop for a while. In fact I think the last race I watched was the Valencia circuit one.

Seeing as my new job involves work for an FE team, I might have to check it out on Sunday and see how they did. I’ve got stuff on Saturday evening.

Turn 15 (the part where the road course merges into the oval) could be a danger zone

https://fenotebook.c...-race-notebook/

“That’s a big question mark we have for running here and for hitting the track tomorrow for the first time,” said the TAG-Heuer Porsche driver. “How big the compression will be I don’t know but that change from the infield to the oval and how much you bottom out and if you could damage the car, there is maybe potential. We expect quite a big impact from that.”

Well, i guess we'll find out tonight!  Practice at 21.30 uk time!

You can really see the AWD mode launching the cars out of the slower corners here, some great camera work!

I think the track looks really good, also punishing, with grass all over the place to catch drivers out!

Multiple camber changes and bankings making it look very intense.

Should be an exciting day of action tomorrow

Great result for Nato. I hope he can translate that into a podium to kick start his season.

I wasn’t expecting Nato to make it that far let alone to get pole so kudos to him, gonna be a messy race later though, some of those chicanes will lead to someone hitting the wall as they misjudge it amidst the frantic action.
