Alonso did that in 2010 in China.

I've often wondered why deliberate jump-starts don't happen. If you know you have the fastest race car, why spend the whole race in traffic when you can just take the lead at the start, and pull enough of a gap to keep the lead after serving the penalty?

Of course it depends on the penalty applied. There's a risk that the stewards might wake up and apply a penalty which more than negates your advantage, but their track record suggests otherwise.

Given that the minimum penalty is five seconds, you'd have to leave the grid rather early to negate it...

It could be worth it to get track position against potentially slower cars.. Especially on tracks where it is hard to pass.

Drivers are allowed to redress an advantage gained by cutting chicanes, for example. Either by backing off to lose what was gained, or by letting an opponent back past if a position was gained by being off track.

And the problem was not only affecting Russell or Norris but Leclerc was also  affected as was indicated in this news piece. so it is quite clear that not penalising Russell was correct.

What article? hadnt heard that. only that his drs wasnt available relayed on the radio in the race

I don't like to quote myself but I linked the article in a previous post.

Good to see transponders getting a chance in F1
