Just an insanely cool shot to kick off the Monaco Race thread.

"Racing around Monaco it's like riding a bycicle in your living room"  - Nelson Piquet

Yes Nelson, but your bicycle ain't going 280 km/h!!

Once again, it's time for the best Formula E race of the season!

In the historical streets of Monte Carlo, where the legends of F1 wrote their names in history, Formula E is trying to write its chapter in the history of Motorsport, producing classic races every year in this magical place!

That's right, you've read it well: actual racing in Monaco!!

That's possible beacause of the very little size of these Gen 3 EVO cars, compared to the limousines of F1.
Just take a look at this brief comaprison between a McLaren F1 car and a Formula E veichle!

Quite telling uh?

This massive difference in size and the almost total lack of aero, produced spectacular races every year in Formula E.

You're going to see two of three wide into the Lowes hairpin, actual overtaking in places impossible for other series, crashes and lots of drama, like it's ever been in FE around Monaco!

1c3o-4.jpg

That's a quite common sight in Monaco Formula E Racing!

Aaaaand another common Monaco sight! No room for mistakes, the walls are there to catch you out!

Edo Mortara got a close encounter with the wall last season at the Piscine corner!

And if you crash, well, don't despare!

You can always go full Kimi Raikkonen & show up in your Yatch for a post-race Siesta!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FORMULA E IN MONACO!

Formula E have been racing in Monaco since it's inception, back in the 2014/2015 season.

Back in these early years, the series was using a shortened layout of the GP track, avoiding to let the cars climb up the Beau Rivage hill: instead, after the Sainte Devote they'd cut down towards the Nouvelle Chicane aera, rejoining the GP track.

Do you remember how it started?

"Vintage" FE onboard! All onboard the Trulli Train!

Generations of Formula E cars passed by and the Monaco short layout became too restrictive for the new cars: in 2021 the series raced on the Full Monaco GP circuit for the first time, and boy, did it deliver!
The Gen 2 Formula E car proved to be comfortable around the streets of the principality, as this onboard lap of Da Costa shows!

If the qualifying was good, the race was even better. Or may i say: classic!

Mitch Evans and Antonio Felix Da Costa fought hard for the entire race and it was set to be decided in the very last lap of the e-Prix.
Evans was closing off all the possible overtaking opportunities, but Da Costa closed in before the Tunnel and launched a surprise attack at the entry of the Nouvelle Chicane.

It was a glorious victory for Da Costa and a last lap overtake for the win in Monaco, something that you don't see every day!

M21-1276-fine.jpg

Formula E cars racing at the Casino Square: a sight every FE wanted to see since the series inception back in 2014/2015, but had to wait till 2021 for the full circuit!

From that race onwards, the Monaco e-Prix have always been one of the highlights of every FE season!

The 2022-2023 editions was a festival of overatking, with more than 200 moves around the field and action packed races, while last year you'll remember Jaguar's strategic masterclass at the front of the field, with Nyck Cassidy and Mitch Evans covering in turns out all the attacks from the other drivers in a perfect execution of the Attack mode strategy!

And is set to be even more special this year, with the introduction of a second race during the weekend and the Pit Boost debut, that's going to change dramatically the pace and the look of the race!

Let's dive into it!

THE 2025 MONACO DOUBLE HEADER

For the very first time in the history of the championship, the Monaco Round is going to be a Double Header!

But the races will be very different from each other, almost giving the feeling of a Sprint Race and a Feature Race even if it's going to be same distance of 29 laps!

In fact, Saturday's Race will be Pit Boosted!

This means that the drivers will have to make a Pit-Stop sometime during the race to recharge their batteries (30 seconds for a 10% energy recharge).
This allows the drivers to push from the get go, do minimal energy saving and attack the whole race distance, as we've seen in Jeddah!

Also, it's an important strategic element: when to do the Pit-Stop? Expecially in Monaco, where traffic is the key, doing the Pit-Stop and having free track at the exit will be essential!

Sunday's Race will be more of a traditional Formula E affair: so, same lap distance, but no pit-stops, so the drivers will have to do their energy saving through the race as always.
This will lead to a tighter, group race, with bonkers action, strategic driving and lots of overtaking as we've seen in the past few editions!

Yearly dose of envy for the guys who are watching the races from their home balconies.

THE CIRCUIT OF MONTECARLO

Sainte Devote, Casino, Massenet, Lowes, Nouvelle Chicane, Piscine, Rascasse, Anthony Noguess...

Every hardcore Motorsport fan knows these names like the names of his family members, well.... maybe even better in some cases!  :smoking:

The Circuit of Montecarlo in all of its glory: 3.337 km of history.
Up & down, into hairpins, Tunnels, chicanes, Casinos, Swimming Pools, with the glorious Backdrop of the Principality.

Racing doesn't get more glamorous than that.

There are worse backdrops in Motor-racing, i'd agree!

NEW FORMULA E LAP RECORD INCOMING?

Part of the fascination in watching Formula E grow through the years and the generations is to take note of the laptimes around Monaco!
Although Gen 1 wasn't racing around the Full GP layout, it's possible to estimate a laptime of around 1'35 around the Principality.

Peak Gen 2 reached the high 1'29  mark, while the current Gen 3 record is held by Sacha Fenestraz in 1'28''773

Now, the fun part!

Gen 3 EVO proved this year that, thanks to the All Wheel Drive and the softer tyres, it can lap from 2 to 3 seconds/lap faster than the baseline Gen 3 model, depending on the track.

So will we see Formula E reaching the 1'26 mark or even dropping into the high 1'25'xx?

The new Gen 3 EVO could destroy the previous FE record by 3 seconds!

Fast Stats | Monaco

- Although the track layout is now different, there is no other circuit on which Formula E has been racing for as long as the Circuit de Monaco: it has been competing here since 9 May 2015, almost ten years ago. The first Monaco E-Prix was the seventh race in the history of the electric racing series. This year, it is already staging races 138 and 139.

- To date, the Monaco E-Prix has been held seven times. Only Sebastien Buemi has won the race twice and taken pole position twice. Nick Cassidy, Antonio Felix da Costa, Mitch Evans, Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne won once each.

- The most successful driver in Monaco in terms of points is Mitch Evans: he scored 98 points in the Principality and has now finished on the podium four times in a row. He finished in the points in each of his six Monaco races.

- All drivers who finished first or second in Monaco in the past, took pole position or scored the additional point for the fastest race lap are still racing in Formula E in 2025.

- The driver who started the race from grid position 1 won each of the first four races in Monaco (Buemi, Buemi, Vergne and Felix da Costa), but not the last three times (Evans, Hughes, Wehrlein).

Don't know how reliable it is, but the TV guide on freeview.co.uk says ITV4 is also showing the Sunday morning qualifying (but not Saturday), as well as the races.

Either way, I shall be ignoring the glorious spring weather Northumberland has been enjoying this week and spending most of the weekend in front of the telly like the race-fan-who-works-in-IT nerd that I am.
